PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I  hope everyone enjoyed the spring break. Even with the cooler weather, it was rejuvenating to have some time without schedules and deadlines. With April, we get blossoms, green hills, and CAASPP testing for our 3-5th graders. CAASPP testing is the state testing where our children take online assessments in English Language Arts and Math, gauging their progress against state benchmarks in the areas of our core academic standards. These tests are not high stakes tests in that the results have no impact on the students’ academic progress.

Then why do we take these tests? We use the data as a whole to evaluate our instruction to see if there are any patterns showing gaps in our students’ skills. After adopting certain curricula or strategies for instruction, the test data can give us insight on the efficacy of those changes. We also use this data as an initial screener for students who may show gaps or challenges in the testing that don’t match with the student we see in class. If we see some students who test poorly, it gives the teachers a heads up that these students may need additional supports in class. We also take a deeper look to see if that student could use some additional support in our reading intervention program or our math intervention program.

So what does a parent do to prepare their child for testing? Just be sure the children are on time for school and that they have had breakfast. If possible, try to enforce bedtime to be sure kids are rested. That’s it. We tell kids the tests are just another way we measure what they know and what we still need to teach them.

The 5th graders begin testing Wednesday, April 10, 3rd Grade starts on Monday, April 22, and 4th graders start on Monday, April 29th.

Here’s to another great week of learning together!

PTA Advocacy Day for Education – Register to Attend
AD19 year logo
PTA’s mission says that we work to “positively impact the lives of all children and families.” This includes a positive school climate and the social-emotional well-being of all students. If children are facing major challenges at home, in their neighborhoods and in their broader communities, it is more challenging for them to learn, grow and succeed in school. This year’s Advocacy Day for Education will focus on social-emotional well-being issues in schools and in the community, and how we might address those issues together. Please join parents, educators, elected officials, and community members for an informative and thought-provoking day as we explore topics related to school climate and social-emotional well-being, including stress and anxiety, mental health and suicide prevention.

Friday, April 12, 9:00am – 2:30pm
San Ramon Community Center, Fountain Room
12501 Alcosta Blvd, San Ramon, CA

The event includes expert speakers in social-emotional well-being and mental health and will provide local resources for parents and students. Superintendents from San Ramon Valley, Pleasanton, Lamorinda school districts, as well as the Alameda and Contra Costa County Offices of Education, will share the major concerns in their districts. Additionally, a local parent associated with the NAMI-Contra Costa County will share his personal perspective and experience.
MINDFULNESS FOR PARENTS WORKSHOP
Wednesday April 17th, 7-8:30pm at Iron Horse Middle School Multi-Purpose Room

We hear a lot about Mindfulness but what is it and how do we do it?

Mindfulness:  With self-directed intent, settling the mind so that our brain and body can be available to be non-reactionary, kind, and thoughtful in response to an exciting or nerve-wracking moment. To get closer and closer to non-reactionary, we also need to practice watching our judgments.

The goal of this workshop is to give everyone sitting in the session the felt sense of mindfulness practice. We will practice some which will allow parents to get an idea of what a sitting would feel like to develop more mindfulness than they have now.
This FREE workshop will help parents start to begin this practice and participants will walk out with ideas to use this practice at home with their families with "cheat sheets" and other helpful ideas.

About this topic, "Parenting is a tough gig. Being a kid isn’t always a walk in the park either. And things can get intense between parents and kids, especially when kids don’t meet parents’ expectations. How to resolve those incompatibilities can point parents and kids toward conflict or collaboration.” - from Elevate Your Parenting Facebook group page, created by Lives in the Balance, non-profit organization associated with Raising Human Beings , Ross Greene’s book for all parents
