Marina Docks - Fillets - Walkways and More
|
Over the last several weeks the Harbor Maintenance Staff have been sporadically replacing the wood/fiberglass fillets in the marina that failed completely. Many of the plywood fiberglass covered fillets are in poor shape and water has infiltrated the plywood causing some rot and softness to these platforms. The replacement material from Bellingham Marine is a Grey Polymer material that requires no painting or sealing to be weather proof. During the replacements we are removing the dock boxes, electrical power, and water lines to facilitate the fillet replacements. When we get to your berth area you will receive a telephone call a head of time to unlock your dock box so we can complete the replacement procedure. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but it is a necessary step to complete this task. The project will take sometime to replace all fillets in the marina, so please be patient.

Commercial Marine Fendering Replaces Tires
|
We recently removed five tire systems, we call "Camels" that have been used to fender areas commonly used for fishing vessels tied up at Wharf 2. These "Fendering Systems" protect vessel hulls and fender pilings along the wharf structures. The Camel systems had a nasty side affect as the barnacles grew in the tires the vessel hulls suffered with scrapes and gouging.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project, and Monterey Harbor team up to release 160,000 Chinook Salmon Smolt in Monterey.
|
In attendance were Ben Harris, Executive Director of the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project, Chuck Backman and Bob Anderson, also from the Salmon and Trout Project, Jimmy Anderson and Monterey’s own Mike Ricketts of the Commercial Salmon Trollers Advisory Committee, and Mokelumne River Fish Hatchery Manager Bill Smith. Each person played a part to put into motion the event that would soon take place.
The tank trucks that were being directed into their places, backed in at the edge of the wharf, had the blue and yellow California Department of Fish and Wildlife Logos. “Mokolumne River Fish Hatchery” was printed in big blue letters along the side of the polished aluminum tank along with the slogan, “Sending Salmon to the Sea” written in italic blue script. I found the slogan somewhat amusing after having seen so many “From the Sea to your Table” type slogans that I had seen on filleted fish labels in markets.
Small talk was exchanged through facemasks and bandanas from our 6’ distance of personal space that COVID-19 precautions have bestowed upon us. It felt good to have the social interactions that are so missed and no longer taken for granted since recent events.
When the time was right, and everyone was sure the birds weren’t going to sabotage our business, a lever on the truck’s tank was pulled. Water along with 160,000 Chinook Salmon smolt were poured from the tanks through a metal pipe over the side of the wharf into the harbor. The water splashed for about a minute and little 3 inch long Salmon darted about the harbor around fall of water, reflecting flashes of light from the deck lights of the fishing vessel tied to the wharf nearby. The little fish quickly swam away into the dark water and were no longer visible except for a few fish that could be barley seen swimming at the surface.

Refuse, Hazardous Material(s), and Stuff in Monterey Harbor and Marina
|
The Harbor staff frequently takes a morning and walk the docks looking for Hazardous materials and items stored on docks, wharf's, and waterfront areas. Has mentioned many times if we find hazardous materials, labeled and unlabeled containers we remove the materials without notice and properly depose of the material. Quarterly a third party inspector comes into the marina and walks all the docks inspecting for material storage violations. Boaters help in maintaining a clean marina is the most important part of preventing and eliminating pollution. Thank you for being a part of the solution.
