Greetings,
I'm not sure if you know already, but our volunteers really help to create our top-tier library & museum sites rolling! Our library truly appreciates the roles of the different talents that are volunteers bring. What kind of activities do our volunteers help with?
You'll often see volunteers helping during storytimes or during our family craft projects. You may meet one if you attend a "Paws to Read" or other events.
We also have a dedicated Tech help volunteer, who helps with all of your tech related questions. Another volunteer has been archiving and indexing all of the obituaries for the Monterey Peninsula.
Our long-time Museum docents interpret history at the Presidio of Monterey Museum, while others tell the stories of John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts at the Pacific Biological Laboratory on Cannery Row. Another hosts talks on fisheries history, and leads numerous historic walks for the community.
Another digitizes photos and documents for us, often in support of independent authors or filmmakers who are researching the Monterey Peninsula. Many of the photo and California History Room catalog records were created by retired librarians and volunteers.
A dedicated group helps with the processing of incoming books here in the library, while others shelve books, or pull items for requests. Almost every book on the shelf touches the hands of a volunteer.
Volunteers help staff with our busy Bookmobile stops, including senior living facilities like The Park Lane or Merrill Gardens.
CSUMB service learners, and volunteers from other area colleges help with special projects. Our Teen Advisory Board have helped our Teen Librarian ramp up teen programs, social media, and services for our community.
I also want to thank our Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation - a group that supports our library through advocacy, booksales, and special events.

Bottom line is that volunteering, and giving back, is at the heart and cornerstone of our Monterey community. You may not directly connect with one of our volunteers when you come in, but if you've checked out a book, used the California History Room, attended an event, walked on a tour....you've indirectly benefitted from the service of our volunteers. And for those volunteers reading this week - we appreciate you!
