Greetings!
Thank you again to our community for voting Monterey Public Library the Best Library in Monterey County by readers of the MC Weekly for 15 consecutive years! This honor represents the commitment and dedication of our library staff, volunteers, friends & foundation, and you - our community. Libraries stay relevant and active based on the people behind them. Storytimes, makerspaces, lending collections of books and "things", local history, lectures, and more...all have value based on the people involved.
One piece that I bring up to people is the library as a 'habit.' What I mean by this is: do you visit a specific grocery store, or do you order online? Do you eat at a restaurant a certain day of the week? Do you have a game night? Do you hiking or walking regularly? Or do you attend classes on a specific day? For some people - libraries are part of their habit - and for others we are not. Just like all other activities, building consistent habits helps to steer our lives. In my opinion, building the library into your regular routine is a healthy habit! For an interesting read related to this, check out The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg.
So thank you for your support and making the library part of your habit.
Warmly~
Brian

IT ALL STARTED WITH AN
UNUSUAL LOOKING ABALONE...

Curious? So was Tim Thomas! Back in 1992, Tim interviewed Roy Hattori about his 1939 diving trip, just south of Point Conception, in search for red abalone. Instead, he discovered a new species. Learn about Hattori’s adventures, abalone and the diverse habitats of Monterey Bay. Tim Thomas will join Tommy Hattori, the grandson of Roy, who has been researching his grandfather’s story for years. Tommy Hattori is currently the Director of Global Studies at the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, California.
