Greetings,
I'm excited to bring back concerts to Colton Hall - we've had several free concerts recently with two more happening soon! Colton Hall was originally envisioned as a school and public hall, but has been used for a number of uses over time. From a constitution convention, courthouse, library, police station, public school, YMCA - to today for Community Development: Planning & Housing Department, and Public Museum...community spaces continue to adapt. Finished in March of 1849, the site has served 177 years with a variety of uses.
Colton Hall reminds me of how libraries will need to adapt their spaces over the next few decades. Flexible use of community spaces is ideal to make sure that we can continue to meet community needs! Access to information is rapidly evolving, however people still need spaces where they can connect to other people and actively learn.
To me, music fits with initial vision of Colton Hall of a community space and education in a perfect intersection. Music is just one way of active learning along with public engagement. (we also host a lot of public school tours here!) Join us for David Morwood Jazz on Saturday, April 4th and violist Kim Uwate on Saturday, May 2nd. Both concerts are free to attend, and seats are available through the Library & Museums events calendar. The more that we can activate Colton Hall for community learning and gathering, the more that we add to the story of Monterey and celebrate the original vision for the site. Hope to see you there!
Warmly,
Brian
