Greetings!
Interested in reading current and back issues of magazines through your device or computer? Your Monterey Public Library recently added digital magazines through the Overdrive and Libby collections. Browse thousands of issues that are always available via your device - no waiting list!
You can find the FAQs about accessing digital magazines through Libby here on their website. Why are we adding these? We have heard from our community that you value physical collections and digital collections. The library still needs to be diligent with our resources and evaluates what may work best for our community. Due to state budget cuts towards shared digital resources we evaluated usage and removed access to our Flipster subscription. However, our Libby & Overdrive eBook and eAudio usage continues to be a strong data point for our community. So by moving digital magazines to a familiar platform, vastly increasing the number of titles available, adding titles in numerous languages, and making them instantly available; we find it an effective use of resources.
Half of the funding for these digital subscriptions comes from the reduced state funding (California Library Services Act) that we received for shared digital resources, and the other half is from our generous community donations. By moving to the Overdrive & Libby platform, you'll find a vast array of tiles like Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Wired, National Geographic, Vegan Food & Living, etc. we're hoping to see an increase in usage of our digital content. Please take a look. Check them out, and use the resource! Your Monterey Public Library looks at our databases annually to make sure that they are effective, efficient, and to make sure that we are solid financial stewards of our public and donor funds.
And note - if you are looking at making Halloween treats for your friends and family, there are a number of special magazine issues in the Libby/Overdrive collection with baking and decorating ideas. There is even a "History of Halloween" special issue in the digital collection. Enjoy! Libby is available on Android and iOS devices.
Warmly,
Brian

Join us for a delicious discussion as we dive into this month’s book flight book club choice Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel.
This classic love story was originally published in Mexico in 1989 and translated into English in 1992.
From the moment Little Tita was born (literally her mother went into early labor while she was making noodle soup), her life was concentrated in the kitchen.
As Tita grows up, her culinary passion turns into a life of a master chef, using cooking as as a way of life, creativity, and expression.

Travels with Charley Book Discussion
Let’s talk about Travels with Charley, Steinbeck’s delightful
account of his loop around America with his beloved poodle!
During the past decade, there has been intense scholarly discussion about how to categorize Travels with Charley. Is it considered nonfiction? Does Steinbeck seem to embellish episodes? Why does he leave out his wife’s presence in parts of the book? Does that mean it’s a fictional account?
Let's discuss Steinbeck’s narrative account of his travels.

| | IT'S AN "UNBIRTHDAY" CELEBRATION | | |
In 1891 writer, Robert Louis Stevenson gave his birthday
away to his friend's 12 year old daughter, Annie Ide.
Annie, unhappy that her birthday fell on Christmas Day,
she felt her birthday wasn’t properly celebrated.
Stevenson “deeded” her his own birthday, celebrated on November 13th.
In only Stevenson style, he formalized the gift in a “legal” letter,
which read: "I, Robert Louis Stevenson . . . have transferred and
do hereby transfer to the said A. H. Ide, all and whole my rights
and privileges in the thirteenth day of November, formerly my
birthday, now, hereby and henceforth, the birthday of the said A. H. Ide.”
Join guest presenter John Sanders for the “unfestivities” as the Robert Louis Stevenson Club hosts an “unbirthday bash” at the library.
