Greetings!
Are you aware that you have free access to newspapers with your Monterey Public Library card?
I know many people are familiar with our digital access to historic local newspapers that cover 1846-1964, however we also have access to Monterey County Herald from 2002 - present through our subscription to Newsbank. The articles are plain text, also eliminating the advertisements that you see online - and most importantly - NO paywall! All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet connection and your library card.
Monterey Public Library has also continued our online subscription the New York Times, meaning that you can access current and back issues of national news from your own home. In past years this service was funded through the California State Library, as part of of the IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) services provided to local libraries. However, Federal and State budget cuts have removed access to different digital resources.
Our digital newspapers are supported by generous donations through private donors and the the Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation, and these investments help to make sure that our community has expanded access to current news content. You can access these sites through our eResources page, which will then walk you through the steps to access.
Although libraries have value as a community "third space" for people to gather and find information, we also know that we need to meet the needs of our community where we can. That means physical collections, outreach and pop-up services, as well as digital collections accessible from home or at sites around our community. We are working on digitizing the gap of Monterey Peninsula Herald microfilm between 1964-2002 thanks to donors from our recent MCGives project. Stay tuned for when that launches!
Warmly,
Brian
