Greetings!

Over the years the California History Room has grown and expanded as living history continues. Recently the library was able to digitize and make publicly accessible Shades of Monterey collections to California Revealed and Internet Archive along with Lee Harbick photography highlighting personal stories and artists throughout the Monterey Peninsula. Why is this important to me? Well, it brings our collections out to a broader audience to tell our Monterey stories. People won't know what we have in our photo collections until we make these publicly accessible. These were made possible through grants and private donations, so we've chosen to preserve your history and our history as part of our MCGives campaign.

We still find treasures in our California History Room and Museums collections. One that I loved bring back to life was this 1937 short travel film about Monterey called "Roads to Romance" which was digitized and uploaded to our Library YouTube page. We found the 35mm film negative reel and a betamax copy in storage. But did you know that 35mm film can deteriorate? The film had suffered from Vinegar Syndrome due to improper storage over time...and the film was in bad shape. Digital copies allow us to provide a backup of the original, but now has made this film accessible to you.

I recently located a box stating "Storm Damage Footage December 8, 1943" with an 8mm film reel inside. This piqued my interest! After digitizing the reel, I saw that it was a a storm that hit the Monterey fishing fleet that we'll be posting soon! The newspaper headline from Monterey Peninsula Herald on December 8th 1943 stated "Million Dollar Storm Damage Here." By the way - If you want to know more about Monterey Peninsula storms - come out to the UnBirthday Celebration on Saturday to hear from Stuart Thornton from California State Parks!

Part of our project is to build a "Memory Lab" where we have equipment for people to digitize their own memories here in the Monterey Public Library. So we plan to buy products like VHS or 8mm converters, film negative and document scanners, vinyl, etc. You'll then be able to book time to digitize your own collections to save them for future generations.

If you'd like to donate towards preserving our Monterey Peninsula History, you can do so in a few ways:

  1. Visit the project page on the MC Gives website at https://mcgives.com/MPL
  2. By check made out to CFMC/MCGives. On the Memo line, write MPLFF or Monterey Public Library Friends & Foundation. Checks can be mailed to CFMC 2354 Garden Road, Monterey CA 93940

The Financial Crime Intelligence Program at the Middlebury Institute presents the last session of Scam Us If You Can, a series of talks that

carrying out scams, and how AI takes these crimes to a new level.

In this session we will look at how AI is

used in romance, “pig butchering”

A VERY SPECIAL

"UNBIRTHDAY" CELEBRATION

In 1891 writer Robert Louis Stevenson gave his birthday away to his friend's 12 year old daughter, Annie Ide. Annie was unhappy that her birthday fell

on Christmas Day and that she received no special birthday celebrations,

so Stevenson “deeded” her his own birthday, the 13th of November.

A lawyer by trade, Stevenson formalized the gift in a letter, which read:

"I, Robert Louis Stevenson . . . have transferred and do hereby transfer

to the said A. H. Ide, all and whole my rights and privileges in the

thirteenth day of November, formerly my birthday, now, hereby and henceforth, the birthday of the said A. H. Ide."

Each year, the Robert Louis Stevenson Club celebrates Stevenson's gift to Annie Ide

with an "Unbirthday Celebration" and

a special presentation.
