Greetings!
Have you walked (or driven) the Path of History?
The Path first opened as a driving route in 1939. The plans started in 1938 by Colonel Roger S. Fitch, retired Presidio of Monterey commander and Monterey History & Art Association (MHAA) president along with Laura Bride, MHAA historian and Custom House curator. Monterey City Council approved the project, and numerous agencies banded together to help promote and preserve the rich history in Monterey. The Path of History opened as a 2.8 mile, 30 minute driving tour following an orange-red painted line running clockwise around Old Town Monterey. The first map started at the old El Cuartel site on Munras (where our first public library once stood!), and the second map started at the French Consulate building when it had been moved to Camino El Estero. Over time it has transitioned into a walking path with 56 different sites highlighted along the way - primarily from the Spanish, Mexican, and early California periods.
When we look at the Path today, it's important to ask "who is missing?" and "what stories need to be added here?" There are many people that helped contribute to the story of Monterey past the initial Alta California era. In 1938 many of these stories were still evolving and part of the current lived experience. Additionally, we need to recognize that our Rumsen and Esselen Tribal Communities were the first people here, and continue to live in our community.
Tonight at 6pm (Thursday August 3rd), we'll be at the Japanese American Citizens League Hall at 424 Adams St. to discuss the addition of two unique heritage walks for the Path of History. Tomorrow at 10am and 1pm (Friday August 4th), we will be travelling the proposed walking paths in the Pearl District and Lower Presidio/New Monterey neighborhoods. The times and stops will be on our Museums & Cultural Arts agenda under Special Meeting. Join us!
Warmly~
Brian
