Last Friday and Saturday, our library was pulsing! There were many new faces & familiar faces in the library as people rushed to find a temporary space to charge their devices, make a phone call, or just keep warm from the storms. Thanks to our Public Works department for getting our generator up and running - and for all the staff that made sure our internet and library services were operational. With increasing critical weather events hitting California and our peninsula we have to be prepared for serving and safety. Critical infrastructure like this allows the library and recreation sites to serve as a hub for our community.

I appreciate all of the kindness and patience from the community as we adapted to provide service through the storms. I'm always interested to hear more about how your library can better serve during events like this. Feel free to let me know!

Warmly~
Brian
SPECIAL EDITION: CANNERY ROW DAYS
EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
There are some pretty fantastic Cannery Row Days Events scheduled as Monterey celebrates the return of the Western Flyer from March 12th -
April 20th. This year’s highlights include zoom lectures, reading groups, guided tide pool programs, nature journal workshops and Pacific Biological Lab Open House Tours.

But first, here’s a bit of history on the Western Flyer:
In the two years after the 1939 publication of The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck increasingly became the center of intense controversy and censorship. In search of a respite from the national stage, Steinbeck and his close friend, biologist Ed Ricketts, embarked on a month long marine specimen-collecting expedition in the Gulf of California aboard the Western Flyer, which resulted in their collaboration on the Sea of Cortez. This exciting day-by-day account of their journey together is a rare blend of science, philosophy, and spirited adventure.

Over the past few years, the Western Flyer has undergone a glorious restoration, and this year's Cannery Row Days will celebrate the return of the Western Flyer to Monterey with lectures, tours and activities.
