Greetings!
You may have seen the news that the Western Flyer has returned to Monterey Bay and will be arriving here this Saturday. I've pondered why this boat is so important to the community - but it's hard to summarize in this newsletter...but I'll try! The Western Flyer is a snapshot of what makes Monterey "Monterey"...commercial fishermen, hard work, canneries, marine biology and science, love and passion, craftsmanship, artists, poetry, literature, ecology, and creativity. All in one place.
The Western Flyer and book Sea of Cortez connect the theories of both Steinbeck "the Phalanx" and with Ricketts "intertidal zones" and "wave theory." Ricketts focused on ecology and the intertidal zone - species were interconnected by where they lived in the environment - leading biologists to a greater understanding of how species live, thrive, and die based on their surroundings. You can see this in action with the rise and fall of the canning industry, and in how the Monterey Bay Aquarium sets up their interpretive exhibits. With Steinbeck, through the actions of individuals within the group a larger purpose arrives: The Phalanx.
Literary history was created on this ship. Their discussions with Sparky Enea, "Tiny" Colletto, Tony Berry, and Tex Travis directly led to Steinbeck writing Cannery Row and a story that he heard from locals on the trip manifested as The Pearl. In Cannery Row, no matter their status in life, one individual's actions impact another in their Phalanx. I believe that these two men connected based on their views on how the interconnected life in the sea does not differentiate from our actions on land. They collaborated on ideas and grew individually and collectively as a result.
How is the Library connected to this? The California History Room of the Monterey Public Library contains numerous documents and photos related to Steinbeck, Ricketts, Cannery Row, and the Western Flyer. Our Pacific Biological Laboratories Museum still tells the stories of Ed Ricketts and the Western Flyer. Not to mention the different books we have available on these topics! History is warm and rich in Monterey. The scientific, literary, and philosophic nature of the Western Flyer will live on as it takes her next voyage.
Warmly~
Brian
