GUEST COLUMN WITH MELISSA MEJIA

Hello! My name is Melissa Mejia, and I am

thrilled to introduce myself to you as the

new Assistant Library Director for Monterey Public Library and Museums.

Previously I was the Branch Manager of

the Marina Library of Monterey County

Free Libraries, and I have also worked

as a manager for the Salinas Public Library

and the Kern County Library.

Libraries have been my absolute favorite community space since I was a child. I grew

up in rural Tulare County where resources

were scarce, but we had a tiny public library that served as my window to

the rest of the world. In fact, there are home movies where four-year-old

me is begging my mom to stop recording and take me to the library! As

a teen, the library served as a safe afterschool space where I quietly

hid in corners and devoured cultural and history books which ultimately

led me to briefly pursue a career in Archaeology. It was not long however before I found myself returning to my first love- the public library.

I am looking forward to sharing my passion and excitement for the future

of Monterey’s Public Library and Museums with you all.

By the way - Hello from Brian! I'll be back at the next newsletter and look forward to sharing insights and thoughts again. Please welcome Melissa when you are in the library as we are excited to have her join the Monterey team and continue to better serve you - our community. Cheers - BEE

1968

WHAT A YEAR!

The 1960's were important years in American history. The Vietnam War, the assassination of President Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther

King Jr., the election of President Richard Nixon, and crucial space exploration all were significant factors playing various roles in shaping our world’s societal norms and culture. Some pivoted to an era of

peace, love, and music. Others protested and rioted.

Join four versatile actors (Fred Bologna, Keith Decker, and Bob and

Linda Felice) in this one hour reading portraying iconic figures of

the year including Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Jackie

Kennedy, Allen Ginsburg, Eldridge Cleaver, Grace Slick, Betty

Friedan, Coretta Scott King, Richard Nixon, among others.

Written by local author Carol Marquart, each short monologue

will capture a different perspective in time.
