This month’s Key Montessori Principle is
“Offer choice whenever possible”
A Montessori approach focuses on strengths and remaining abilities, and the ability to choose often remains even when many other skills have deteriorated. Being allowed to make choices for ourselves represents autonomy and freedom - qualities we must respect in anyone with or without dementia. The role of a care partner is to facilitate and support this freedom, which often leads to fewer responsive behaviors. By creating an environment that provides safe and relevant choices, we see more focus and interest in the environment.
Cameron Camp explains the importance of offering choices and how to best enable persons with dementia to make choices in this brief video:
|
|
All activities should incorporate a choice, whether that is a choice between activities (Would you like to join this walking group, or work on this project?) or an order of events (Would you like to shower first or brush your teeth first?). Choices can be presented to groups (Would you like read this story, or this one?).
