JUNE IS PRIDE MONTH

Celebrate Pride Month on June 30! Pride on the Plaza will be held at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring. Join in a day filled with fun and festivities sponsored by Montgomery County Pride.

In May, the Volunteer Center hosted An Evening of Appreciation for AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteers to celebrate the impact of 280 volunteers across three programs. Volunteers work with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program, the Department of Health and Human Services Bone Builders program and Montgomery County Volunteer Center programs. Two hundred thirty of these volunteers are AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteers!


Program leaders nominated Paulette Dawes, Janis Tabor and Mark Willen to receive Certificates of Recognition from County Executive Marc Elrich.

The local AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program is hosted by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center as part of a nationwide network of volunteers, Americans age 55+ help address critical needs in the community.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Gaithersburg HELP

Gaithersburg HELP is a fully volunteer-run organization committed to supporting residents of Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village. Volunteers support community members by connecting them to various resources.


Food Pantry—Operating by appointment, the pantry provides 3 to 5 days of food for families, adjusted for size, and including baby food and formula. 


Transportation—To medical and social services appointments for elderly and disabled individuals who are unable to drive themselves.


Special Support—Funding for prescriptions and community referrals to connect with other resources beyond our scope of services.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Combating Human Trafficking

Sandy Smith hosts Make A Difference, a show about how people make a difference every day in Montgomery County. In May, Sandy interviewed Wendy Stickle from the Montgomery County Human Trafficking Prevention Committee. Take a few minutes to watch this eye-opening discussion on the county YouTube channel. FEATURED OPPORTUNITIES

Empowering the Ages Pre-Kindergarten School Readiness. Apply now and start working with a pre-K child in the Fall! This program offers interaction with a child and their family over Zoom and in person throughout pre-K and Kindergarten. A lot of support and supplies provided. For volunteers ages 50+. AfriThrive Food Pantry. Set up and serve clients from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Fridays in Aspen Hill. Training and orientation are provided, and only a three-month commitment is required. Click here for details.


Catholic Charities Hospitality Desk. Spend a Friday helping visitors find their way around the Catholic Charities building on Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. Fluency in English and Spanish is needed. Click here for information and registration instructions.
