Spotlight on Student Service Learning (SSL)

Back to school is a great time to plan to earn the 75 (seventy-five!) SSL hours required for graduation from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The Volunteer Center partners with MCPS and includes volunteer organizations and opportunities on the Montgomery Serves website that meet SSL requirements. These are all marked with the graduation cap logo shown above. You can use filters to search by minimum age, zip code, and more! This SSL search tip sheet is helpful, too. Continuing the back-to-school spotlight on SSL, tune in to the September edition of "Make a Difference" to get the latest updates on SSL requirements from Donna Kleffman, Instructional Specialist and SSL Coordinator for MCPS. The show, which is scheduled to air online on Montgomery County's cable channel by mid-September, will help you get started on your SSL plan!
"Make a Difference" is a monthly program hosted by the Volunteer Center's Sandy Smith. If you missed it, check out the August show, in which Sandy interviewed several 2023 Montgomery Serves awardees, including Christine King, Volunteer of the Year; Viveka Sinha, Youth Volunteer of the Year; and Morrisa Rice, from the Volunteer Group of the Year, Xi Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

From there, you’ll search for opportunities in the MCVC database together, teaching them how to use database features.
