Old Growth Forests
Wednesday, April 30th
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Ham Room
Old-growth forests are relatively rare in New Hampshire. This presentation will describe how to recognize the unique physical characteristics, important ecological attributes, and wildlife that favor such forests, and their importance as carbon reserves to help cool our planet. We will finish with a visual tour of several of the finest old-growth forests across our state, where ancient trees are a source of awe and inspiration.
Recent research has shown that to meet the needs of society and nature, we need both old-growth forest reserves and sustainably managed forests.
David Govatski is a retired forester and silviculturist. The US Forest Service employed him for 33 years. He has visited old-growth forests in all parts of North America and has a particular affinity for Alaska's Tongass National Forest's old-growth forests. David works as a Naturalist and lives with his wife in Jefferson, NH. David and Kathi were married in the Quinault Rain Forest on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington. National Poetry Month
The Wrath-Bearing Tree
Month of April
For a handful of years just before COVID-19, the library sponsored a poetry slam. We enjoyed wonderful participation from very talented locals ranging in age from early teens to adults. One of the poetry slam winners is a local educator, Kathleen Murdough. When she isn't engaging students in U.S. government classes, coaching a high school track team across finish lines, or practicing Karate, she might be writing deeply heartfelt poetry about her family members' legacies as military service members. Some of those poems have been published, and it's exciting to know that much of Kathleen's writing started with a Conway Library event!
In honor of National Poetry Month, we invite you to take a moment to celebrate a talented local poet, Kathleen Murdough. You can read one of her poetry slam submissions here!
