Valentine Vintage Greeting Cards Art Exhibit
Month of February
Ham Room
Since she was 14, Kyra Murphy has been fascinated by the historical significance of antique Valentines. With intricate lace covers and sentimental messages, these cards provide a glimpse into the past. She studies specific eras through ephemera like Vintage Valentines and has designed cards for Paramount Cards in Pawtucket, RI, where she served as one of six art directors.
Kyra enjoys the humor in "penny" Valentines exchanged in school and has a collection from her childhood. She also appreciates the witty nature of Vinegar Valentines, which poked fun at various behaviors. The evolution of these cards would not be possible without Esther Howland, the "Mother of Modern American Valentines," whose inspiring story reflects the role of women in the late 1800s.
For more information on Esther Howland, read last year's article from Catherine E. Shoichet.
