NKCH Earns Prestigious Wound Care Certification

North Kansas City Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Wound Care Management Certification. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects NKCH’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center’s commitment to providing a higher standard of safe quality patient care. To meet the standards of the world’s preeminent accreditation and certification organization, the center underwent a rigorous review. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national clinical practice guidelines and performance measures. “Since we began caring for patients over 20 years ago, we have been steadfast in providing consistent, quality care,” said Karl Stark, MD, medical director of the Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center and vascular surgeon with the Midwest Aortic & Vascular Institute. “As with our Level II accreditation from the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society, this prestigious Joint Commission recognition signifies our program’s commitment to the highest standards of patient care. I commend our team for their desire to advance the care of complex, chronic wounds.”

We’re reaching out today with a quick update on the state of our local blood supply and to let you know about a few projects CBC is working on this summer!

State of Local Inventory:
We continue to see a sharp decline in our type O- inventory. As you may know, O- is the universal blood type, meaning everyone on the planet can receive a unit of O- blood. It’s the most used blood type, especially in emergency settings when doctors often do not have time to type out a patient’s blood. Currently, our local inventory of type O- sits below a 2-day supply and is officially at emergency low levels. We are still experiencing shortages of all other blood types and need those donations as well, but we are in immediate need of type O- blood donations.

April – May: Support for Ukrainian Refugees
In March, CBC was contacted by Global Blood Fund (GBF) and asked to partner with them, along with blood centers across the country, to help raise funds to support a rehoming program for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. Rehome Ukraine is a program that matches Ukrainian refugees with households offering shelter and accommodation across the UK, US, and Canada. This partnership was a no-brainer and we eagerly signed on to support this initiative.
Throughout April, $1 was donated to Global Blood Fund for every donor who both donated and registered. Because of the enthusiastic response seen from donors, we are extending this campaign into May as well.

August: Pint for Pint
Lastly, we’ve got an exciting campaign coming in August that both supports local businesses and encourages blood donations. We are seeking breweries, wineries, and pubs across our service area who are willing to partner with us to encourage blood donations throughout the month of August. Outreach has already begun and we’re aiming to have interested businesses signed on by May 31.

Thank you so much for support!
Parkville Named a Tree City USA for 32nd Year in a Row

For the 32nd year in a row, the City of Parkville was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Parkville is one of only 15 communities in Missouri that has been named Tree City USA for 32 years or more.

The City achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements -

• A tree board or department
• A tree care ordinance
• An annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita
• Arbor Day observance and proclamation
