Full Moon Maple

November

By: Maggie Dietz

Show's over, folks. And didn't October do

A bang-up job? Crisp breezes, full-throated cries

Of migrating geese, low-floating coral moon.

Nothing left but fool's gold in the trees.

Did I love it enough, the full-throttle foliage,

While it lasted? Was I dazzled? The bees

Have up and quit their last-ditch flights of forage

And gone to shiver in their winter clusters.

Field mice hit the barns, big squirrels gorge

On busted chestnuts. A sky like hardened plaster

Hovers. The pasty river, its next of kin,

Coughs up reed grass fat as feather dusters.

Even the swarms of kids have given in

To winter's big excuse, boxed-in allure:

TVs ricochet light behind pulled curtains.

The days throw up a closed sign around four.

The hapless customer who'd wanted something

Arrives to find lights out, a bolted door.

A Special Invitation

Ministry Notes

Creation Care Column from Pastor Russ

Praise the Lord from the earth,

You sea monsters and all deeps;

Fire and hail, snow and clouds,

Stormy wind, fulfilling God’s word;

Mountains and all hills,

Fruit trees and all cedars;

Beasts and all cattle;

Creeping things and winged fowl...

Let them praise the name of the Lord,

For God’s name alone is exalted;

God’s glory is above earth and heaven.

    —Psalm 148

We know God through the things that God has made. The first foundation of any true

religious seeing is, quite simply, learning how to see and love what is. If we don’t know how to love what’s right in front of us, then we don’t know how to see what is. So, we must start with a stone! We move from the stone to the plant world and learn how to appreciate growing things and see God in them. In all of the natural world, we see the vestigia Dei, which means the fingerprints or footprints of God. Perhaps once we can see God in plants and animals, we might learn to see God in our neighbors. And then we might learn to love the world. The soul is prepared. The soul is freed, and it has learned how to see and how to receive and how to move in and out from itself. Such individuals might well begin to understand how to love God.

Search Committee Corner

Plenty has happened since last month’s update. The Search Committee has completed the Parish Profile and made it available on three websites: our own, that of our Diocese of Massachusetts, and the Episcopal News Service’s. ENS also features our search on its social media outlet. Here’s the link to that posting:

https://www.facebook.com/EpiscopalNewsENS/posts/pfbid02sxgPAGCjoEGgVwmhiJkm3PgUEPF8PrzefmGqmiquyBU9cz2rkQKypyypmQJs38gwl

The Search Committee will be grateful if you could "like it" and share it, if you haven’t done so already. Producing the Profile involved a collective effort by both the entire membership of the Search Committee and other members of our church community. Vestry member Jane Martin helped to choose the photos. Melody Martin, who designs St. Mary’s website, undertook the same task for the Profile. Father Scott, the Rev. Elisabeth Tunney, our consultant, and the Rev. Kelly O’Connell, Canon for Transition Ministry, provided critical advice. Particular kudos go to Allison Bresette, St. Mary’s Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator, Parish Administrator Julie Remie, and Treasurer Barry Olofsson. Allison, helped by Julie, worked tirelessly on inputting text and illustrations into the system – doing extra proofreading along the way. Allison also designed the PDF for the Diocesan website. Barry spent several hours organizing financial material that the Diocese requires to include in and to accompany the Profile.

We have given clergy interested in our rectorship until November 16 to “discern with us”. As of October 25, a dozen had submitted their application materials. Meanwhile, we’re working on the evaluation methodology we’ll use to discern candidates. This will include criteria we’ll apply to choosing candidates who will meet with us on Zoom and the range of questions that we’ll ask them. We aim to apply the criteria in a fair and inclusive manner – by asking the same questions of each candidate whom we interview, for example. After Zoom interviews, we expect to arrange visits to the parishes of the top candidates. In light of those visits, we’ll invite the top three to Barnstable. Then we’ll determine our next rector.

If you have any questions or comments for us, you can now email them directly to our email address: [email protected].

Please join us for a Thanksgiving Day Celebration at Saint Mary's

We will gather in the church for a Thanksgiving Worship Service at 11:00 AM. Immediately following the service you are invited to join us for the feast in Walden Hall. In the spirit of sharing our gifts together, we are asking everyone to contribute something towards the meal. We will provide the Turkey, stuffing, and gravy and ask that everyone else sign-up to bring either an appetizer, a side dish, a dessert or some beverages to share with the group. This is your opportunity to bring your favorite traditional dish or even to try some new cullinary delight.

Please click here to sign-up. Please indicate how many individuals are in your party and what you plan to contribute to the celebration. It would be very helpful if you could be as specific as possible in the comments section. Hopefully this will help us ensure we don't end up with nothing but turkey and pie. If you are unable to bring food or beverages please consider offering your services for set-up, kitchen work or clean-up.

As always, ALL ARE WELCOME. Please be sure to share this invitation with anyone you know who may be seeking company and a festive meal. Thank you for helping us organize this celebration!

Helping Our Friends at Rosebud

Our hearts are broken to learn of the fire that destroyed Holy Innocents Church at Rosebud Episcopal Mission in Parmalee, SD. Click here to read more about this tragedy. We know many of you spent time out there with our mission trips and that you are desperate to find a way to help. This weekend we will hold a special collection during our services to go towards the re-building of this special little church. Our ushers will have envelopes at the rear of the church for those who wish to designate their offering for Rosebud.

Thanksgiving Turkeys for Cape Codders:

If you would like to contribute with a supermarket card or check donation please leave off in the office in envelope labeled Thanksgiving Turkeys. Please include your name and address so we can properly acknowledge your gift.  Checks should be made out to Community Action Committee. Questions ? Contact [email protected]

A Call for Help from the Here Now Ministries

With the cold weather coming and a significant housing shortage on Cape Cod, our October and November wish lists include warm clothing to keep our folks safe during this blustery time of year. We are currently seeking the following donations:

  • New or gently used Hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants (Men and women, all sizes).
  • Cotton Socks (wool socks, although warm, retain moisture and lead to foot issues)
  • Blankets,
  • Toiletries
  • $10 gift cards to Cumberland Farms or Dunkin Donuts.

Donations can be brought to the HERE NOW Worship Service on Sunday, November 19 at 1:45 PM, and folks are always encouraged to stay for worship and to share in fellowship.

In addition, monetary donations can be made to Homeless Ministries at the Cape Council of Churches to assist us in providing shelter for folks during particularly inclement weather or in the case of emergencies.

Checks can be made out to the Cape Cod Council of Churches with Homeless Ministries in the memo line, and mailed to the Council office at 320 Main St, Hyannis MA 02601.

 Here Now Ministries is a radically inclusive and radically welcoming open space for worship, prayer and fellowship. We meet outdoors on the front lawn of the Baptist church in Hyannis and welcome the un-housed and housed to be in community as God’s people. Our vision is to meet people where they are and gather in God’s love to help break down barriers and stigma, to sing , pray, and worship together and to share a communion feast where everyone is welcome at the table.

Garden Committee News

Fall is the busiest time of year for our Garden Committee. We are having regular Saturday morning work parties every other week throughout the Fall. All are welcome to join us!

Our next Garden Work Days:

Saturdays at 9:00 AM

November 4

November 18

A GIANT THANK YOU to the Project Forward Students and their teacher for the hard work they put in restoring the War Memorial Garden. The old woody azaleas were removed and the area is being replanted with white azaleas and mountain laurel. A wonderful accomplishment just in time for Veteran's Day. Be sure to stroll back towards the Gazebo to visit the monument.

We have been chipping away at our list of work to tackle this Fall. This is what is next on our list:

  • Kitchen Garden

weed and mulch walkways

  • War Memorial Restoration

Replace the diseased and woody azaleas.

Edge and mulch the area.

  • Father Nicholson's Grave

Need to give this area some TLC and plant some shade loving plants.

  • Daffodil Butterfly Meadow

Cut back the Joe Pye weed.

Plant about 800 new daffodil bulbs in late November or early December. We will need LOTS of helpers this planting day!

Made With Love Marketplace

Continuing through December 17th, there will be a pop-up market table set up in Walden Hall with items “Made with love by Saint Mary’s Elves and their friends.” This market table will have handcrafts, jewelry, preserves, baked goods, bouquets, houseplants, whatever parishioners make and wish to donate that week. It will always be a fun and different mix.

We hope that on two weekends, November 18-19 and December 16-17, our fabulous Saint Mary’s bakers will help us present a full blown bake sale for our holiday shopping. We request that donors label and price their donations if possible. What would your “elf self” like to make?All funds raised will be divided equally between Saint Mary’s Admin and Outreach. Have any questions? Reach out to Beth Hearn for more information.

Volunteer to help our elders and shut-ins

The organization “Meals On Wheels” is sponsored by Elder Services of CC & Islands. The Program  delivers a daily, free pre-packaged main course meal with fruit and desert to senior shut-ins in the Yarmouth area. Driver teams are greatly needed. Each team has a set route of 20-25 locations (1.0>1.5 hours). There is mileage reimbursement and established substitutes when breaks are needed. Husband-wife teams are ideal. Please email Jud or Bonnie Phelps for more information or call 508-362-5921. Thanks for caring.
