Hints of Autumn In The Garden

September

By: Helen Hunt Jackson

The golden-rod is yellow;

The corn is turning brown;

The trees in apple orchards

With fruit are bending down.

The gentian’s bluest fringes

Are curling in the sun;

In dusty pods the milkweed

Its hidden silk has spun.

The sedges flaunt their harvest,

In every meadow nook;

And asters by the brook-side

Make asters in the brook.

From dewy lanes at morning

the grapes’ sweet odors rise;

At noon the roads all flutter

With yellow butterflies.

By all these lovely tokens

September days are here,

With summer’s best of weather,

And autumn’s best of cheer.

But none of all this beauty

Which floods the earth and air

Is unto me the secret

Which makes September fair.

‘T is a thing which I remember;

To name it thrills me yet:

One day of one September

I never can forget.

A Note From Your Senior Warden

September 2023 -

Not a fortnight goes by without a parishioner reaching out to ask two questions, and the first is “can we keep Father Bellows?” Which while heartwarming and touching, the answer is a resounding “no” because the Episcopal church’s Interim guidelines, and Scott’s contract state so. Which brings forth “how’s the search coming?” And we’re both happy to report – “we have no idea.”

Of course the Search Committee is on our minds, and included in our prayers, but as the Diocese directs, once the Vestry has empaneled the committee and they have been blessed by the Priest, the “Searchers” are on their own, even shielded from the Wardens!

Of course, many of you, being dedicated members of St. Mary’s of Barnstable, or other Episcopal churches, have been through this before – so why are we rehashing this now? Because we again ask you to put the Search Committee near the top of your prayer list.

The Search Committee is entering its second year, and while the passing of time may have turned our attention to other items, the “Searchers” work, and the need to feel the Holy Spirit has only intensified. It is here that prayerful assistance from the members of the St. Mary’s family is again summoned, with all the care, force and love that was unleashed in September 2022. God has already chosen our next Rector, however it’s up to us, and our Search Committee to unlock all the tumblers, and open that special door. So please give a mindful minute for Emory, Arlene, Bill, Stella, Peter, Barbara, Susan, Rob, Aleina, Peter and Dorothy.

Thank you!

Brad Goodwin - Senior Warden

Ministry Notes

Creation Care Column from Pastor Russ

The Season of Creation

The celebration of this Season began when Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I established a Day of Prayer for Creation for the Orthodox in 1989. The World Council of Churches extended the celebration into our current pattern. During the Season of Creation, we join with billions of Christians around the world to celebrate in prayer and action our Gospel calling to protect the Earth that God has entrusted to our care.

St. Mary’s will observe the Season of Creation for five weeks in September and October. The Season will open on Labor Day weekend and conclude with the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi and the blessing of the animals on October 1.

What is the urgency of climate and ecological crisis?

“We’ve changed the planet, changed it in large and fundamental ways. Our old familiar globe is suddenly melting, drying, acidifying, flooding, and burning in ways that no human has ever seen.”  — Bill McKibben

Because of the relentless burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, the world’s climate has become disrupted and unstable. The web of life is unraveling before our eyes. Human society is at risk of collapse within decades along with mass extinctions of species and forced migrations. Over the last fifty years, 60% of the planet’s mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish have been wiped out by human land development and habitat destruction. More than a million species are on the way to extinction. Oceans are acidifying and warming, sea levels are rising, coral reefs dying, and ecosystems collapsing.  Record-breaking and intensifying weather patterns are increasing deadly droughts, floods, storms, and heat.

What does Christianity have to do with ecology?

God the Creator pronounced the world “very good” and gave humans the task to “till and keep” the Earth as stewards and caregivers rather than owners. Destruction of nature is a sign of our estrangement from God. Christian hope is in the renewal and restoration of all things. Our participation with God in creating a more just and habitable world and living more gently on Earth is how we share in what Archbishop Desmond Tutu calls the “supreme work” of Jesus Christ, who reconciles us to God, one another, and God’s whole Creation. The good news of God in Christ is for all creatures and the whole Earth.

Via Sacre is an alternative form of worship held every Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM; it is filled with candlelight, time for meditation and prayer, Bible readings and sermon, and the sharing of Communion – and community. Each week may be a little different without any set liturgy, but there is plenty of music – both in the Taizé tradition and others with upbeat rhythms.

Through her engaging method of biblical interpretation, readers will come away with a solid understanding of this scripture’s historical and theological context.

Begins Tuesday, September 5, 7-8:30pm, in the Sandy Neck classroom at First Lutheran Church.

Book: $15

Movie Theology Resumes!

Sunday, September 17, at 3 pm in Walden Hall,

Feature Film, “Mr. Holland’s Opus”.

Mr. Holland is a music teacher at an Oregon HS. It’s a temporary gig, or so he thinks, until he can finish his musical masterpiece. Life gets in the way, however and he becomes quite fond of teaching. But there’s this void with this transcendent piece of music he has long dreamed of composing. It’s a beautiful story, underscoring the difference a teacher can make in the lives of their students.

It was released in 1996, and stars Richard Dreyfuss as Mr. Holland, Glenne Headly and W.H.Macy. It is a bit long at a little over 2 hours, but it flies by.

Please bring your own beverage, adult or soft, a seat cushion and we’ve got the rest, including the popcorn. See you at the movies!
