Advent: A Time of Expectation, A Time of Hope

Come, thou long expected Jesus,

Born to set thy people free;

From our fears and sins release us,

Let us find our rest in thee.

                                              The Hymnal 1982, #66, stanza 1

Our lives are filled with a sense of expectation. From birth to death we are a people who wait – who anticipate. Parents await the birth of their children and the taking of first steps. Children await the first day of school and the privileges of being older. Teens look to High School and the independence that adulthood will bring. Younger adults look to that first job, career advancement, success. Older adults look to retirement, free time, rest. Sometimes we spend our time hoping for better things to come. Sometimes we hold our breath and pray that bad things won’t find us.

Advent is a season of expectation and preparation; a time of waiting and hoping. At this time we are called as children of God to prepare our hearts anew for Christ to come into the world. It is a time of taking stock of who we are, who we have become, and who we are called to be. It is a time to remember and celebrate the past – the amazing gift of God in the sending of His only Son to earth to be like us. But it is also a time to anticipate His coming again – the time when he will complete the mission He began nearly 2,000 years ago and continues to this day through us.

And so as we prepare to welcome our Savior once again into our world, let us make our Advent hymn our fervent prayer: “O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of all mankind; bid thou our sad division cease, and be thyself our King of Peace.”

May you have a blessed Advent and Joyous Christmas season!

Faithfully,

Creator of the stars of night,

your people’s everlasting light,

O Christ, Redeemer of us all,

we pray you, hear us when we call.

In sorrow that the ancient curse

should doom to death a universe,

you came to save a ruined race

with healing gifts of heav'nly grace.

When earth drew on to darkest night,

you came, but not in splendor bright,

not as a king, but the child

of Mary, virgin mother mild.

A Special Letter from the Diocese of Massachusetts Calling for Support for Jerusalem this Advent Season:

"Advent 2023

Dear People of the Diocese of Massachusetts,

" As we enter into the sacred season of Advent, our hearts are heavy at the continuing devastation, trauma and grief in the Holy Land. We call upon all our people and congregations to pray fervently, and to participate in a special Jerusalem Christmas Offering along with opportunities for advocacy and learning. Details on each follow below. ......

Your bishops call upon each congregation in the Diocese of Massachusetts to conduct a special collection during the Advent and/or Christmas season in support of the ministries of the Diocese of Jerusalem in this time of crisis.

Archbishop Hosam Naoum notes that his diocese of only 27 congregations also conducts the work of 35 institutions – hospitals, schools, rehabilitations centers and more – manifesting Christ’s work among people of all faiths. We need to support this ministry."

Seeing the World as a Gift

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

“In the old times, when people’s lives were directly tied to the land, it was easy to know

the world as gift. When fall came, the skies would darken with flocks of geese, honking “Here

we are”. The people are hungry, winter is coming, and the geese fill the marshes with food. It is a gift, and the people receive it with thanksgiving, love and respect.

“For the greater part of human history, and in places in the world today, common

resources were the rule. But some invented a different story, a social construct in which

everything is a commodity to be bought and sold. The market economy has spread like wildfire, with uneven results for human well-being and devastation for the natural world. But it is just a story that we have told ourselves, and we are free to tell another, to reclaim the old one.

“One of these stories sustains the living systems on which we depend. One of these

stories opens the way to living in gratitude and amazement at the richness and generosity of the world. One of these stories asks us to bestow our own gifts in kind, to celebrate our kinship with the world. We can choose. If all the world is a commodity, how poor we grow. When all the world is a gift, how wealthy we become.”

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, a scientist, a teacher and an enrolled member of the

Citizens Potawatomi Nation. She lives in Fabius, New York, where she is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder and director of the Center for Native People and the Environment.

Search Committee Corner

The Search Committee has begun the latest phase in its task of identifying our next rector. During the past 15 months, we have overseen the CAT survey that so many parish members completed; created the Parish Profile on the basis of the CAT’s findings; and called for clergy members “to discern with us” about our vacant rectorship. By November 16, the final day for applicants to contact us, we had received expressions of interest from 23 members of the clergy. We’ve learned that this number is high for a parish of our size. Now, we have started to study the material that those applicants have provided. It consists typically of a cover letter, a CV or résumé, two sermons, and an Episcopal Church Ministry Portfolio. The latter is a document in which Episcopal priests list their experience in ministry. Just as important from our point of view, each portfolio contains its subject’s written responses to a series of queries about her or his ministry. Subjects include the individual’s specific successes, liturgical style, spiritual wellbeing, engagement in pastoral care, personal stewardship, and thoughts about the future of the church.

Before the window on applications closed, committee members had participated in a session of anti-bias training. Led by The Rev. Kelly O’Connell, our region’s Cannon for Transition Ministry, this was designed to ensure that we treat all applicants equally. Honoring that requirement, we waited until the deadline for applications had passed before inspecting any single one. Once we opened candidates’ materials, we began the first part of a multistage process that will lead us, with the Holy Spirit’ guidance, to determine whom to recommend to the Vestry as our next rector. Each committee member is scoring applications independently. We’ll agree on whom to interview via Zoom by consensus – an approach we’ll use throughout the search to determine which clergy we’ll visit in their parishes, whom we’ll invite to Barnstable, and ultimately which priest we recommend calling to St., Mary’s.

Greening of our Church this Saturday night,

December 2, at 6:00 PM

Where did Hanging of the Greens come from?

It is a custom predating Christ when people would bring indoors, green boughs and branches to sustain them during the dark days of winter without electricity. This tradition of hanging evergreen boughs and branches inside carried through to the Christian era. Evergreen trees, garlands and wreaths became a symbol of the light and love of Christ that shines through even in the darkest of times. These boughs, branches and circular wreaths remind us of the everlasting life that is ours through Christ Jesus.

Please RSVP to Allison if you will be able to join us after the Taize Worship to help "Green our Church" We will be hanging wreaths inside and stringing lights outside the church. Please bring warm clothes, gloves and any headlamps or flashlights you may own to help with the outdoor projects. There will be hot cider and popcorn for all our helpers.

We hope you will all join us for this fabulous and festive night at Saint Mary's. We encourage you to invite neighbors, friends and family. All are warmly welcomed! Please bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We will be singing Christmas carols and Angels Treasures will be open for business.

This is also the very last night to bring in your gifts for the Giving Tree. We hope the tree will be overflowing with items for the children in need on Cape Cod.

Thank you!

An Invitation ~ Cape Cod Chorale Christmas Concert

Did you know the Cape Cod Chorale has been hard at work practicing at Saint Mary's since this Fall? Several of our own Saint Mary's Choristers participate in the Chorale and they have extended an invitation to our parish:

We're at it yet again! This year's holiday concerts will both be at 4:00 in the afternoon so that you can avoid nighttime driving ... and perhaps consider dinner afterwards. Here's the concert info:

There will be some sing-along chances, and the fare will include everything from the complicated "Gloria" by John Rutter to pieces in Hawaiian and Norwegian, to familiar carols, to a Hanukkah song. A fine brass quintet will join our wonderful pianist to accompany the festive music.

We have tickets and would be delighted to get them to you .. just email us.

We look forward to seeing you out in the audience. We've been rehearsing the music since September and these are going to be terrific concerts.

Thanks!

Rob and Bev

Garden Committee News

If you get a chance, please do take a stroll through the gardens and notice all the hard work completed over time by our team of incredible volunteers, Project Forward students and professional landscapers. Things may not be in bloom but they are tidy and trimmed and in far better shape for the Spring than in a long time. Our Kitchen Garden has blueberry bushes and the walkways are lined with fresh stone to help with the swampy pathways. The playground fence has a fresh border planting of indigenous inkberry and beautiful wigellias. The Memorial Garden has been weeded and edged and cleaned up and THIS Saturday we will be planting close to 1000 bulbs, (WITH YOUR HELP WE HOPE!) The gardens are a true labor of love and we are deeply grateful to all those who are so dedicated to keeping them beautiful. Thank you all for your support!

It will always be a fun and different mix.

We request that donors label and price their donations if possible. What would your “elf self” like to make? All funds raised will be divided equally between Saint Mary’s Admin and Outreach.
