November 2021: Have a Happy & Healthy Movember
Did you know that men die almost six years younger than women for conditions that could have been prevented through annual preventive visits and exams? In November, let’s bring awareness to how men can seek early detection and treatment to live longer, healthier, and happier lives!
Eat Well:
The trillions of microbes in our gut play a huge influence on our immunity, metabolism, mood, weight, inflammation, and more. Whole health begins in the gut, and when we start a health journey, we must not overlook caring for our gut. Adding in probiotics through a food-first approach is a step in the right direction. The bacteria in probiotics can help create a balanced ecosystem so the gut bugs can thrive and do their jobs to optimize our health.

Five ways to add in probiotics daily:
  1. Add kimchi to your sandwich
  2. Use fermented kefir yogurt in your smoothie
  3. Ask for a side of miso soup with your sushi
  4. Stir fry vegetables with tempeh
  5. Swap out soda for kombucha

Incorporating various lifestyle behaviors can also support our gut health. These behaviors include managing our stress levels, reducing our alcohol consumption, prioritizing sleep, and exercising.
Live Well:
Men need a healthy living plan in addition to their career plan, retirement plan, and family plan. Take time this month to plan healthy habits to reduce the risk of many preventable health conditions!

How can men take action? Five things every man should know:

  1. Spend time with good people – stay connected to friends and family. Social connection plays a center role in our health and longevity.
  2. Talk more – in the U.S., 75% of suicides are men. You do not need to be an expert to help someone that's struggling; Learn what to say and how to support the men in your life with Movember Conversations: https://conversations.movember.com/en-us/
  3. Know your numbers – early detection is key when it comes to prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Know your risks and talk with your doctor!
  4. Know your body – get to know what is normal for your body and go to the doctor if something does not feel right.
  5. Move more – remember that every step matters! Incorporate more movement whenever you can throughout the day- park farther away, stand instead of sitting while working, go for a walk after dinner- it all adds up!

Resources to Thrive:
Be Well:
This month, we encourage you to connect with others and reach out to a friend, colleague, neighbor, or family member. Start simple with a short note and invitation to chat. A little support can go a long way; you may just turn someone's day around for the better!
