August 2021: Boost Your Brain Health
|
|
Did you know that your brain only weighs 3 pounds? While it may be light, it is a workhorse having to do a lot of heavy lifting for us as the brain works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When we sleep, the brain is still working! We need our brains to think, dream, see, move, and more. Our brains age just like the rest of our body so August focuses on ways to boost your brain health!
|
|
Our brain is made of approximately 60% fat, and it also thrives when we provide it with fats from our diet! What does dietary fat do for our brains and bodies? Eating quality fat will assist with our hormone production (hello happy mood!), absorb nutrients from the food we eat, and help balance blood sugar levels when eating a higher carbohydrate meal! Additionally, proper nutrition can help prevent cognitive decline along with lifestyle behaviors like sleep and exercise. Vitamin D and antioxidants are a few of these essential nutrients that can enhance cognitive function and prevent disease!
Nutrient-dense fats:
- Beef, pork, eggs, salmon, chicken, liver, olives, dairy, butter, avocado, nuts, seeds
-
Oils: Olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil
Vitamin D-rich foods:
- Salmon, eggs, tuna, sardines, and mushrooms
Antioxidant-rich foods:
- Berries, mango, green tea, turmeric, parsley, bell peppers, brazil nuts, walnuts, purple potato, sweet potato, egg yolk, shrimp, sardines, and more!
- Fun fact – blueberries are a memory-boosting brain food as the nutrients impact the hippocampus (memory centers) of your brain!
