What we have been up to:

  • I2D2 would like to extend congratulations to AISP Director and I2D2 partner Dennis Culhane for his recent appointment as a Co-Director for the International Population Data Linkage Network (IPDLN). Together with other US Co-Directors Abel Kho and Amy O’Hara, this trio will be planning the first US-hosted bi-annual conference of IPDLN which will be held in Chicago in 2024. Congratulations, Dennis on this honor!


  • The I2D2 team has been working with the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children to conduct a comprehensive child care workforce study. Preliminary results are now available in this first data brief highlighting the importance of compensation for provider recruitment and retention.


  • The recent release of the updated IA Data Drive is being shared and used widely, including for local strategic planning across Iowa’s diverse 38 ECI local areas. Check out our new resources and tutorials to help advance more data use.

A recent analysis of the impact birthing unit closures may have on vulnerable families found that the year before unit closures, mothers receiving WIC or Medicaid started prenatal care earlier and were more likely to attend higher numbers of recommended prenatal care visits, suggesting that strengthening connections between these programs is one successful way to ensure moms receive the prenatal care they need.


In the last report on preschool attendance in Iowa, analysis found that rural children experience more individual and cumulative risks at birth compared to other children. However, these children living in rural areas are more likely to have a public preschool experience.

Thirty-three myths and misconceptions about population data: from data capture and processing to linkage - This article from IJPDS discusses the characteristics of population data which make them challenging to use and offers insight into common misconceptions surrounding data linkage.


$122 Billion: The Growing, Annual Cost of the Infant-Toddler Child Care Crisis - In 2018, I2D2 released a report calculating the annual cost of the child care crisis in Iowa. This was based on previous numbers released by Ready Nation, which are updated in this recently released publication.






  • In collaboration with Iowa Healthy Birth Day program, I2D2 findings about the importance of prenatal care were shared with statewide practitioners and health care advocates at the 2023 Public Health Conference of Iowa. See the full agenda here.
