May 12th was National Child Care Provider Day! This special day recognizes child care providers, teachers, and other educators of young children everywhere. I2D2 continues to partners with stakeholders in early childhood education to improve outcomes for Iowa families. Read our recent work to understand the needs of the Iowa child care workforce in our preliminary brief.


I2D2 is part of the Actionable Intelligence for Social Policy (AISP) network. AISP aims to assist various government agencies, university partnerships, and community initiative integrate data to drive policy and improve lives. Explore the framework and integrated data landscape that I2D2 and various sites use to link data and guide policy.

In Iowa, mental health was listed as the third most important area of support needed by 41% of families, behind only “jobs that cover my expenses” and “awareness of available services". 40% of early childhood education workers rely on at least one public benefit such as Medicaid, WIC, SNAP, CCA, Hawk-I, and others. 30% of respondents use Medicaid. Exploring Remaining Needs and Opportunities for Improvement in Rural Communities: A Focus on Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) Services - OPRE released a brief that found MIECHV Program provides significant support to families in rural areas who may otherwise be isolated. Additionally, the brief explores the importance of creating connections to other early childhood programs, such as Head Start, that may help address continuing needs of families once the child ages out of MIECHV.


Integrated Early Childhood Data Is an Essential Tool for Advancing Racial and Ethnic Equity - Integrated Early Childhood data is an essential tool to understand and strengthen in racial and ethnically diverse system. Read about the policy-maker recommendations and how integrated data can address issues such as which families have access to programs, where there are service and workforce gaps, how children fare later in their educational trajectory, and what programs best meet the needs of children and families.

Early childhood integrated data systems will be showcased at the upcoming meeting of Harvard’s Strategic Data Project, with I2D2 Director Heather Rouse presenting a panel discussion with other IDS leaders from Chicago, Baltimore, and Boston.


The Early Childhood Iowa State Board meeting will be held on Friday, June 2nd. Annual updates on the progress of I2D2 and IA Data Drive will be discussed in the context of the state’s Strategic Plan for Early Childhood in Iowa.
