Executive Committee Monthly Update

Jacob Thorius, P.E., NACE President

Good day everyone!! It has been a few months since I have written and things have been busy between projects and issues in my home county of Washington, travels for NACE and spending time with my family, my “Why” as I talked about in Schaumburg. Sometimes things don’t always go the way you have planned, sometimes life throws you a big ‘ol curveball and you have to adjust your swing to get a good hit.

Here in Washington County we have been busy with a variety of projects and have had to deal with a variety of things that were not planned, like finding more rock in your grading project which required a $150,000 change order to excavate that material and then find some “extra” dirt to build the road. We were planning to do some minor shaping and pulling of shoulders on some gravel roads, but instead we received 20+ inches of rain in a two-week window in July, with some of it coming nearly 6 inches at a time costing the county about $90,000 in roadstone, labor and equipment to fix the nearly 100 locations that were damaged. Have these been frustrating events for us? Yes! But my team worked to find ways to hit these curves and make sure the right work was getting done, even if it meant using funds planned for future maintenance and construction work. That is going to delay future work, but I know my team will find ways to minimize those delays and ensure we still accomplish what we want to as we work to improve our roads.
