A new look for our monthly newsletter as we move from the a boring format created by me and moving into a more eye appealing letter. As in the past it is our objective to keep everyone updated on what is taking place in the equestrian community and the role TR&HC plays in its support of various programs.

President's Corner

As you have read here in the past, the three lenses through which I try to manage the Club are Tradition, Philanthropy, and Fun.  In June and early July, we celebrated one of our longest traditions with the 94 th running of our Charity Horse Shows for which the US Equestrian Foundation this year awarded us their Heritage Show status, one of just 28 in the country.  The 73 rd Steeplechase, 44 th Horse Trials, and 86th Any and All Dog Show are all coming this Fall.

This was also a good month for Philanthropy.   

Recently, TR&HC gave $6,000 to three local charities at the Charity Horse Shows held at TIEC. We also had a little bit of fun with it by pre-designating three local charities to be the recipients and having the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd place winners of Saturday night’s Grand Prix jumping event draw envelopes to decide which charity got the $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 gifts.  Foothills Humane Society won the top prize, PEER took the second largest, and Foothills Equestrian Rescue “won” $1,000.  Nonetheless, all three were pleased with their checks. TRHC also awarded $5,000 in college scholarships to four individuals.  Emilia Frederick received a $2,000 grant while Maren Daniels, Troy Lieberman, and Amanda Fisher each received $1,000.  Payton Medford was awarded an additional $2,000 from the Roger and Jennifer Smith’s International Equestrian Foundation.

Last year, TRHC designated over $46,000 in donations to various local organizations.  We are hoping to reach a similar amount this year. Your memberships and donations greatly help us to achieve this level of generosity.

Sesquicentennial Donation
The Town of Tryon will celebrate its 150th anniversary, the Tryon Sesquicentennial, on Aug 30-31 and Sept 1 and TRHC has donated $1,600 to the event and become a Platinum Sponsor. Pictured are Event Organizer Julia Calhoun, also owner of the Tryon Toy Makers Shop, Jamie Dunn, TRHC VP, and Terry Lynch, TRHC President. The Sesquicentennial will be three days of historical exhibits, dance, enactment, and musical groups centered along Main Street and at Harmon Field. Watch for details in local media sources. Given the Club's history dates all the way back to 1925 and is interwoven with the Town of Tryon, we felt it was important to support this important celebration of the town's history.

Steeplechase
73rd Running of Tryon Block House Steeplechase Saturday October 5, 2019
The running of the 73rd Block House Steeplechase is quickly coming up in a couple of months and there is still plenty of time to secure your parking spaces or entry into the VIP Tent. There will be noticeable improvements made to the track since the spring making this event even better.

There is also a pre-race party being held the evening before at the VIP Tent which will include buffet, cash bar, music / dancing and an auction.

Special Note For TR&HC Members

Any members that are attending the 73rd Fall Running of The Tryon Block House Steeplechase please contact the Tryon Riding & Hunt Club either by Phone or Email so that we can arrange to mail to you a couple items:

  • Voucher for program
  • 2 Wrist bands to gain entry to the VIP Tent (Food & Drinks not included)

Entry to the VIP Tent will be available before and in between races.

Mark on Your Calendar

Parking Spaces and tickets for the 74th running of the Tryon Block House Steeplechase will be available for members beginning December 2nd, 2019. As in the past members will be able to secure their spots before it is opened up to the public.
44th Annual Horse Trials
On October 19 and 20, TRHC will conduct our 44 th consecutive Horse Trials.  This year the event will again be at FENCE.  consisting of competitions in Dressage, Cross-Country, and Show Jumping.  Competitors combine their scores from all three phases to determine the winners.  Last year, we had 147 riders from 13 surrounding states competing in 9 divisions and we are hoping for more this year.  We also had 6 college teams competing for the College Cup Trophy.  The Farm House contributed greatly to all of the prizes for our winners.

Over 75 volunteers are needed to run the event, there are suitable roles for everyone and if you’ve never volunteered at a Horse Trials before, don’t worry, we will teach you how to do it!  It’s not hard! Please consider coming out!  The greatest need is for jump judges during cross country where you will sit next to a jump and report as each rider goes over it.  We will shortly be sending everyone the volunteer sign up link in a separate email.  Please watch for it!

Any & All Dog Show Sunday November 10, 2019
We have moved this event to November hoping that mother nature will provide us cooler weather for both the people and their dogs. This is the 83rd year of show and looking forward to a great event for all.

This event will be comprised of:

  • Various Dog show classes
  • Food & drink
  • Demonstrations
  • Lots of activities for the kids

We are also looking for sponsors for this event and if you or your company would be interested please contact the TR&HC Office at the below link.

TR&HC Trophy Corner
This past July at the TRHC Charity II Horse Show, I was fortunate enough to be the presenter of the Brownland's Graduation Day Grand Pony Hunter Champion Trophy. The trophy is a awarded to the pony hunter champion with the highest point total in the small, medium and regular large pony hunter divisions. This is the 2nd year I have been the Grand Dame of trophy polishing, but the first year that the award brought happy tears to my eyes.
It felt like hundreds of hot parents, trainers, riders & especially the ponies teamed up to jump non-stop around the challenging pony hunter course. When the final jogs were done & Grand Champion Howie Do It, ridden by Finley Morgan, was announced we were shooed out of the usual arena trophy spot to make way for the much appreciated water trucks. So all the finalists & I met under the shade of the walkway as I presented the Trophy and we took pictures.


What was different was that many of the pony riders got to see the trophy as a group! They had never seen the perpetual trophy with many of their names engraved on it before. I tried to explain the perpetual nature of TR&HC trophy and I hope the looks on the riders faces was JOY & HONOR in the name of their accomplishments. I heard them reminiscing about their Grand Champion Ponies, who had won it and my own tears welled up as I thought of my own pony Champion, Belle Acres Fawn all those years ago!

It is not about the Trophy but the memories they preserve🏆🏇🏻❣️

The TR&HC Board is currently accepting applications for anyone interesting in joining the Board in 2020 for a three year term. We are a "working" Board for individuals who want to join a great organization and help the local equestrian community. It can be hard work at times but it is also a fun and rewarding job making a difference for so many people and organizations. Please contact Gary for an application.
