A Note from Jay
Be Our Guest
For the third year in a row,
Halcyon Farm
in Brewster will welcome friends and supporters of the CDP to
A Summer Evening on the Farm. This wonderful event, set for Wednesday, August 24th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, is a celebration of the work the CDP does to support local growers and shellfishermen. It is also a great way to connect with friends and neighbors committed to the sustainability and vitality of our community.
And new this year, we're pleased to announce an exciting addition to the evening. Our friends at
Sunbird Kitchen in Orleans will host an intimate Farm to Table dinner directly following
A Summer Evening on the Farm (beginning at 7:30 PM). Sunbird is one of our Micro Loan clients, and chef/co-owner J'aime Sparrow is a CDP Board Member. The Dinner promises to be a treat for the taste buds, including locally grown produce complemented by matching wines and beers. This part of the evening is limited to 24 diners
so buy your tickets now!
Thanks for your continued interest in the CDP and I hope to see you on the Farm on August 24th.

The Heart of Our Family

Before

"Xanadu", as it has been lovingly named, is a place of great contentment f
or those who know it. Nestled in the hills of Truro, it has been a gathering place for one family for over five decades. As it does, however, time had taken its toll on the physical structure.
With a furnace and windows almost as old as the house, as well as a leaky oil tank, the home was in a "desperate situation and getting worse" according to the owner, Valerie Falk. Retired and living on a fixed income, she
wasn't sure she'd beable to stay.

Strong Local Businesses
Planning with the Future in Mind
With so many of the local businesses we work with currently in the height of their season, our Business & Credit staff have been busy planning for the "off season". According to CDP Director of Economic Development, Glen Ohlund, "Staying current with what Lower Cape business owners need is a critical component of our work. The non-summer months are our prime time to offer educational programs and support services to strengthen these start-up and growing businesses." In addition to a line-up of popular annual workshops, CDP staff is working on some new classes targeted to local farmers - a growing industry on the Lower Cape. One workshop will focus on techniques to extend the growing season. The other will share practical marketing tips to enhance the business image and stand out from the crowd.
Ohlund went on to say, "One of our core objectives is to strengthen existing business sectors, especially those in traditional and renewable resource areas. Our programming to support farmers and food production aligns well with our regional approach to economic development."

A Sustainable Future
Sunny Sunshine
The solar panels at our affordable rental properties have been humming for the past three months thanks to all that sun. Between SREC credits and power generat
ion savings on our electric bills, our panels have generated $10,437 in revenue since May. This revenue supports the operation of our affordable rental property portfolio - allowing us to maintain safe, stable affordable housing for residents on the Lower Cape.
There's alot going on in the solar industry right now and it can get overwhelming. We recently invited local experts, Jason Stoots of E2Solar and Eric Saftler of Blue Selenium to join us on our weekly radio/television show, This Place Matters to help simplify things. Listen here to learn more about how it all works.
And here's another great resource from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.
