Spotlight on the Greenhouse Team

Three years ago, a new team took the reins of the MV Garden Club Greenhouse. The previous crew, having guided the greenhouse through the challenges of the pandemic, stepped back to take a well-earned break. With little experience but plenty of enthusiasm, a fresh group of volunteers, led by Anne Kushwaha, stepped forward —ready to learn, grow, and dig in (literally!). We’ve relied on books, YouTube videos, and each other—proving you don’t need to be an expert to get involved.

The Greenhouse Calendar: A Year of Growth

Our greenhouse season kicks off in September, when we clean the entire space and prepare to take cuttings. This year, we’re experimenting with taking some cuttings at home during the summer, which is actually the ideal time.

Over the fall and winter, we care for those baby plants—potting them up, shaping, and even pinching them to encourage healthy, bushy growth (a tough but necessary step, we’ve learned!). By February and March, we begin sowing seeds, enjoying the magic of watching tiny sprouts emerge and grow.

Every year brings new lessons, and while we’ve battled pests from time to time, we’re proud to say we’ve avoided major issues—thanks to strict rules about dipping new plants and banning outside soil. Our plant variety continues to grow, and while some experiments flop, that’s part of the fun and learning.

Proceeds from the annual plant sale help cover the greenhouse expenses including rent to The Wakeman Center where the greenhouse is located. We plan to expand next year’s offerings by inviting MVGC members to donate plants — Have divisions or extra cuttings at home? Drop off labeled donations outside the greenhouse at The Wakeman Center. With more contributions, we hope to grow both our plant selection and our fundraising impact to the club

A Team Rooted in Friendship

Our greenhouse committee includes 12–14 members, depending on the season. We meet every Monday morning starting in September, and while some help with watering during the week, there’s no mandatory time commitment. The shared passion for plants and community means the work always gets done—with kindness and encouragement.

We also gather for dinner monthly, rotating restaurants around the island. It’s a wonderful way to relax, connect, and support one another outside the greenhouse.

We’re always open to new members—if you’re curious, don’t hesitate to reach out to anyone on the team. We’d love to welcome you.

Floral Design Workshop Blooms with Community Spirit

On Saturday, May 3rd, members of the Garden Club—Nancy Cabot, Joan Eville, Colleen Harrigan, Pat Ingalls, Jayne Isford, and Barbara Saltarelli—joined forces with the Friends of the Oak Bluffs Library to host a vibrant Floral Design Workshop at the Oak Bluffs Library.

The event brought together an enthusiastic group of participants eager to learn the art of floral arrangement. With a stunning variety of fresh flowers generously provided by Cronig’s Market and Takemmy Farm, and containers supplied by the Garden Club, the room quickly filled with color, creativity, and joy. Following some helpful instruction, attendees designed their own beautiful arrangements to take home.

This delightful event showcased the Garden Club’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and collaboration with local organizations. It was a wonderful celebration of shared creativity, friendship, and the beauty of flowers.

Fawn Hurwitz, club member and floral designer extraordinaire, showcased her talent at the Boston Museum of Art’s “Art in Bloom” event from May 2nd to May 4th—an incredible honor for her. Fawn’s design interprets the Wall from the Tomb of Wenefdjedsen, featured on level 1 in the Art of Ancient Egypt wing.

Bringing Blooms & Cheer to Windemere

Joan Eville, Chairperson for Donaroma Outreach Projects

On April 23 Garden Club members Joan Eville, Nancy Cabot, and Jennifer Angell brought the joy of spring to the residents of Windemere Nursing Home with a creative and uplifting visit.

Nancy led an engaging art project where residents designed their own spring flowering trees. Each participant created a unique and beautiful collage that captured the spirit of the season. Meanwhile, Joan and Jennifer assisted residents in arranging fresh flowers in small vases to brighten their rooms. Together, the group also created colorful floral displays for the two nurses’ stations, spreading cheer throughout the facility.

The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club extends heartfelt thanks to Donaroma’s Floral Shop for their generous monthly flower donations, which make this meaningful outreach possible.

Call for Volunteers: Help MVGC Shine at the Ag Fair!

Each August, the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club proudly participates in the MV Ag Fair, a beloved Island tradition and a perfect opportunity to showcase who we are and what we do. Our display helps promote the MVGC’s mission and deepens our connection with the community.

We’re looking for creative, enthusiastic members to join this year’s Ag Fair Display Committee—and help us go for the Blue Ribbon!

What’s Involved:

  • Planning Sessions - We’ll hold a brainstorming meeting in late June or just after the July 4th holiday to develop this year’s theme. After choosing a direction, we’ll divide up tasks—gathering materials such as plants, signs, art, and props; researching; and scouring our own stashes, local thrift shops, nurseries, and club storage at the Old Mill and Wakeman Center.
  • Second Meeting Early August We’ll regroup to share progress and fine-tune the display.
  • Display Set-Up Thursday, August 21 The team will bring all materials and assemble the booth at the Fair.
  • Takedown Monday, August 25 Help pack up and close the show.

Whether you can participate in all or just some of the process, your help is welcome and appreciated! This is a fun, collaborative project that brings members together in the spirit of creativity and community.
