Spotlight on the Greenhouse Team
Three years ago, a new team took the reins of the MV Garden Club Greenhouse. The previous crew, having guided the greenhouse through the challenges of the pandemic, stepped back to take a well-earned break. With little experience but plenty of enthusiasm, a fresh group of volunteers, led by Anne Kushwaha, stepped forward —ready to learn, grow, and dig in (literally!). We’ve relied on books, YouTube videos, and each other—proving you don’t need to be an expert to get involved.
The Greenhouse Calendar: A Year of Growth
Our greenhouse season kicks off in September, when we clean the entire space and prepare to take cuttings. This year, we’re experimenting with taking some cuttings at home during the summer, which is actually the ideal time.
Over the fall and winter, we care for those baby plants—potting them up, shaping, and even pinching them to encourage healthy, bushy growth (a tough but necessary step, we’ve learned!). By February and March, we begin sowing seeds, enjoying the magic of watching tiny sprouts emerge and grow.
Every year brings new lessons, and while we’ve battled pests from time to time, we’re proud to say we’ve avoided major issues—thanks to strict rules about dipping new plants and banning outside soil. Our plant variety continues to grow, and while some experiments flop, that’s part of the fun and learning.
Proceeds from the annual plant sale help cover the greenhouse expenses including rent to The Wakeman Center where the greenhouse is located. We plan to expand next year’s offerings by inviting MVGC members to donate plants — Have divisions or extra cuttings at home? Drop off labeled donations outside the greenhouse at The Wakeman Center. With more contributions, we hope to grow both our plant selection and our fundraising impact to the club
A Team Rooted in Friendship
Our greenhouse committee includes 12–14 members, depending on the season. We meet every Monday morning starting in September, and while some help with watering during the week, there’s no mandatory time commitment. The shared passion for plants and community means the work always gets done—with kindness and encouragement.
We also gather for dinner monthly, rotating restaurants around the island. It’s a wonderful way to relax, connect, and support one another outside the greenhouse.
We’re always open to new members—if you’re curious, don’t hesitate to reach out to anyone on the team. We’d love to welcome you.
