Sunrise Toyota Monthly Newsletter | October 2013 |
|
Greetings!
As Fall approaches, the days continue to get shorter, the weather changes from hot & sunny days, to the drizzly, wet and cooler autumn driving season. Now is a great time to have our staff check and replace your vehicles' worn out wiper blades, top up the windshield washer fluid and possibly provide your vehicle with its' annual Aquapel windshield treatment. It's also a great time to think about replacing your summer tires with winter tires; remember, all-season tires are only effective from 7c and up, below 7c they begin to lose the all-important grip your vehicle may need in an emergency situation. Taking care of your vehicle before the worst of winter arrives also means you are less likely to be left stranded, or worse, in a situation that could have been avoided with routine vehicle maintenance. From our team to you, we hope you have an enjoyable Thanksgiving and Halloween season, and we look forward to sharing our November newsletter with you soon! Feel free to share your thoughts and stories with us through visiting our Google+ Page. One there you can write your review, post photos or ask us questions! Enjoy your October copy of the Sunrise Toyota eNewsletter...share it with your friends!
Sincerely, Mark Smith General Manager |

What's On the Menu?

REGULAR SERVICE HELPS ENSURE THE WELL-BEING OF YOUR TOYOTA
If you're a homeowner, you know that if you don't maintain your property, problems quickly become obvious. Grass is overgrown and dotted with weeds, eavestroughs become filled with leaves, furnace filters clog up and small issues can lead to big problems. Wouldn't it be nice to have a simple menu to follow that guides you through all the things you need to do on a regular basis to keep your home in top shape and to maintain its highest possible resale value? Thankfully for Toyota owners, there is a list like that for your vehicle. It's the Toyota Maintenance Menu, a useful tool in guiding you through the care for your vehicle. You can find it online or view it at your dealership. As vehicles become ever more intricate and technology becomes more sophisticated, proper maintenance is even more critical. You don't have to understand how your Toyota operates to understand that following a regular service schedule as outlined in the Toyota Maintenance Menu goes a long way toward keeping it running at peak efficiency for years to come. The maintenance parameters are set by the people who design and build your Toyota. The menu is based on the exhaustive testing done during development of every new vehicle. Your Service Advisor can help explain it to you, and there's an easy way to check for yourself. In fact, you should make yourself familiar with the routine of looking after your car from the day you take delivery. All the information you need is readily available in our Toyota Maintenance Menu at www.toyota.ca/maintenance. You then fill in the appropriate details of your vehicle. When you choose "View" you will see what was performed at your previous service, a list of what needs to be done at the "Current Service" and what to expect at the next service interval. Some of the lists will be quite short, not much more than oil and filter changes along with a set number of inspections. Others, as the vehicle ages, become more intensive but they are essential. You can also opt to call up the full schedule which will let you map out the services to expect at each interval though your Toyota's lifetime. Print it out and take it along to the dealership if you like. It will give you a peace-of-mind reference when you talk to your Service Advisor. The menu starts at the first service (8,000 km) and runs in 8,000-km increments right up to 512,000 km. It's not just for newer Toyota vehicles either. It covers every Toyota built from 1990 to the present. Do you own a Celica? It's there. So is Previa. Those vehicles haven't been built in years, but many are still on the road and they need regular maintenance. Club Toyota talked to a Service Advisor who told us a story which illustrates the importance of following a regular maintenance schedule. It concerns a customer who faithfully brings in his 2006 Sienna minivan right on the schedule.
"That van runs like a top," says the advisor. "The customer is a pilot so he's used to doing things by the book. He says his goal is to take that Sienna all the way to the end of the maintenance schedule - at 512,000 km. At the rate he's going, I think he is going to make it." The maintenance menu schedule is there to help you avoid preventable repairs and ensure a long and trouble-free life for your Toyota.

Drop It and Drive
|
While the battle against drinking and driving is far from over, we are seeing the number of vehicle accidents related to alcohol use coming down across North America. And just as we were gaining ground on that front in the struggle against preventable driving accidents another front in the war has started. The new front in the never-ending war is the onslaught of the relatively new phenomenon of texting while driving. Now, sending a text message from your cell phone while you are at home or at work is one thing, it is quite another when you are texting while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States, driving a vehicle while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. The agency reports that sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent - when driving at about 80 km per hour - of driving the length of an entire football field while blindfolded. So, it's no wonder why so many vehicle accidents are being caused by texting and driving. The Harvard Centre for Risk Analysis says that texting in cars and trucks causes over 3,000 deaths and 3330,000 injuries per year. And Canadians are texting while driving at an alarming rate too. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association does not want people texting while driving. The association points out that texting while driving puts the driver and everybody else on the road in danger. The web site www.dropitanddrive.com says that texting while driving is equivalent to drinking four beers and then getting behind the wheel. And just like someone driving while intoxicated, drivers, while texting, tend to exceed the average driving speed; their brake and reaction time decreases and they have slower responses to sudden changes such as traffic light changes. A woman in Quebec died about two years ago when her car slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer truck as it merged with traffic. She had been sending her boyfriend text messages. Her boyfriend wrote on Facebook that the police investigation showed the use of a cellphone while driving caused the accident. So, you lose your life basically because you wanted to send a text message to your boyfriend? And this brings up another key point - what are people texting about while driving? Apparently a number of text messages are work related sent by drivers on their way to their jobs. Do we have to do that? If there are any changes in our routines we're going to find out about it as soon as we start the day's work. Do we have to be texting our girlfriends/ boyfriends/spouses/ partners while driving? What's so almighty important that can't wait until you actually get to meet that person later in the day or until you're finished your drive. The point is that the vast, vast majority of text message are about trivial matters that could wait to be discussed at a later period. So, why text at all while driving? Maybe it's because we believe we need all this new technology in our lives - our smartphones, our ipods and ipads and iphones, our blackberries, and our laptops. Maybe it's because texting is one of the new "in things" and people want to do it as it makes them look smart or 'in the know". So, what can we do to reduce the danger? Maybe we should just turn off our cell phones/smartphones while driving and simply not send any text messages until we are somewhere sitting down. Maybe we could ask ourselves a very simple question while driving - is any text worth risking my life or the life of someone else?

Keep Your Precious Cargo Safe and Sound This Year
Nobody is interested in experiencing a real scare this Halloween. So with a little preparation and a lot of caution, the little goblins and gremlins in your house are sure to have a ghostly time.
Darth Vader sounded like a good costume choice in the store, but it may not be the safest trick-or-treating choice. You might want to add some reflective tape to their outfit so that cars will be able to see them. A light-saber is an elegant weapon for a civilized age, but a flashlight is never a bad idea either-that way your little ones will stand out and be able to see where they're going at the same time.
If you do not shamble along with your child's Zombie posse, do make a point of knowing the exact route they will be taking to leave the guesswork out of finding them. If they do go out alone, make sure they take a cell phone or a list of emergency contacts with them just in case they get lost or something happens.
If you happen to be driving when the festivities are in full tilt, leave your cell phone off or out of reach! It only takes a moment to change your life and that of someone else. Drive slowly and be on the lookout for kids being kids; most pedestrian deaths do not occur at intersections. Remember that the excitement of Halloween may drain your brain of everything but the next house offering free candy.
Finally, remind youngsters over and over again how to cross a street safely and properly-to always look both ways before crossing, and always use crosswalks or cross at corners.

The All-New 2014 Corolla Has Arrived!
|
LOOK AGAIN. YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A COROLLA LIKE THIS BEFORE.
The all-new, completely redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla is turning heads and attracting lots of attention.
Few vehicles originating in the 1960s are still major players today. Fewer still have offered consumers such a consistent and dependable set of core values over 11 generations of evolution and redesign. The consistency is no doubt part of Toyota Corolla's enduring worldwide appeal. It is the best-selling car of all time - 40 million sold so far, with 1.3 million of them right here in Canada.
But it was time to tweak the Toyota Corolla formula. Time to loosen up a bit and have a bit more fun.
"We remain committed to offering Canadians a Toyota Corolla that is an easy, rational choice to own," said Toyota Canada President, Seiji Ichii, at the 11th generation Corolla's official Canadian reveal in Ottawa in June. "But with this new 2014 model we are also offering Canadians a more emotional Corolla - a Corolla that is easy to love."
COROLLA FAST FACTS LED LIGHTS THE WAY ~The 2014 Corolla is the only car in its segment with LED technology for low-beam headlamps. The single-lamp LEDs exceed the brightness level of halogen lamps. BUILDING A BETTER CVTi-S ~ Engineers set out to improve the drivability of the new Corolla with the CVTi-S, Toyota's first North American-market pulley-style transmission. The shifting of the CVTi-S feels more direct, it has more response when drivers adjust the accelerator and it boosts fuel efficiency. For S models with CTVi-S, the SPORT mode even further enhances the dynamic driving experience. S models can also be optioned with paddle shifters. COROLLA IS CANADIAN ~ All Corollas sold in Canada are built in Canada. The Corolla is built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ont., that opened in 1988 and has produced more than three million Corollas. This assembly plant is the most awarded North American plant for quality, employing over 7,000 and the annual capacity for the plant is 470,000 vehicles. BODY BUILDING WITH HIGH STRENGTH STEEL ~ The 2014 Corolla's unibody is rigid and strong, due to extensive use of high-tensile strength steel. This aids handling and driving dynamics, but also vastly improves collision performance and keeps overall weight down.
