Pastor's Post

On July 5th, 2026, Killeen FUMC Youth group took 21 youth and adults to UM Army (United in Mission) Mission Trip in Seguin, TX. When we got there shortly after 2, we hit the ground running. The youth and several of the adults unloaded the trailer and van, while the kitchen crew (Brandy, Lisa and Sallie) began to work in the kitchen. David and Jeff had already been there several days setting up the youth sites where the youth would work. My early task was to check in all the churches. There were five church groups, in total.

This was a youth led mission trip where the youth did the work, with adult supervision. Youth led on the work sites and in worship. The youth completed 16 sites, with 6 ramps, cleared a hoarders yard (which by the way, took three 40 ft. dumpsters), did lots of yard work, painted, did siding, and made picnic tables for the host church. These are just some of the tasks they did! The jobs they completed were important but not as important as the relationships that were built between the youth and their clients.

Those relationships include two very special clients, both from World War II.

One was a WWII veteran who had not been out of his house for three years. He was so thankful for the ramp the youth built, which enabled him to get out of his house that he attempted to do a dance while using his walker. He was a hoot!

The second WWII client was a WAC (Women’s Air Corp). She had not been out of her house for several months. Again the ramp the youth built gave her a sense of independence for which she was truly grateful. It was my honor to be able to introduce one of the first WAC pilots to Colleen, whom (if you didn’t know) was one of the first women to work on the Apache Helicopters. The Women's Air Corp client and her daughter (both veterans) attended the client night dinner.

This youth led mission trip was a great success, both in the relationships fostered with the clients, and in accomplishing each of the site mission goals.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of this trip, was the eagerness and pride the youth took in leading the worship services. Join us on Sunday, July 26th, to hear more personal mission trip testimonies and view the slideshow displaying all that the team experienced.

With God's Love,

Yvonne Smith
