We are excited to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary of our Feed the Need Ministry. Years ago, First United Methodist Church had “Lunch with Neighbors” on Thursdays. This downtown ministry was shut down by the city.
At a United Methodist Men’s meeting, some of the men were reminiscing about that vital ministry. John Karlik asked what was stopping them from beginning a new ministry. John talked to then Pastor Patricia Warden, who connected him to Pastor Steve Chae of the Jesus Hope and Love Mission Center, located in downtown Killeen.
John remembered a ministry in Waco called, Feed the Need; and decided this was an appropriate name for our new ministry. Feed the Need officially launched Feb. 4, 2023. John, his wife, Melony, and Pastor Chae made a sack meal of fifty sandwiches and snacks. They came back empty-handed and were happy to have provided food for those in need.
Since then, the ministry has grown to several servers, who are now feeding a hot meal AND a take home sack lunch to 80-100 downtown friends. Last year, the group served OVER 2,000 meals!!! The United Methodist Men have been instrumental in providing wholesome meals to those in need. Our Women in Faith Circle groups have also provided much needed support. Sunday school classes also pitch in. FlintRock Builders has been instrumental in providing supplies. Faithful members find themselves each 1st and 3rd Saturday, on the side of the “OLD HEB” in downtown Killeen.
Members talk, laugh, and share fellowship, while offering much needed nourishment to old and new friends. Our Gideons have Bibles available for giveaway. The group often has other ministry items available for anyone who wants to pick them up.
In the summer, we provide our friends with T-shirts, shoes, and socks. In the winter, YOUR donations of coats/jackets, hats, gloves, shirts, shoes, socks, and blankets help keep our downtown friends warm.
We celebrated with John as he received a well-deserved award from the Daniel Stark team in 2024.
John says this has been a group effort from the very beginning. He would like to say, “THANK YOU” to the members and friends of First Untied Methodist Church, Killeen for being the hands and feet of Jesus. You have given your aid in countless ways: by serving, by donations of varying kinds, by praying for the workers and the meal recipients. WE WOULD NOT BE CELEBRATING THIS ANNIVERSARY WITHOUT YOUR HELP!!!!
