Transit Updates

Federal Employees Ride Free Pierce Transit During Federal Government Shutdown

Due to the federal government shutdown, transit agencies serving Kitsap, Pierce, and Mason counties are offering free service to federal employees.

In Pierce County, federal employees who present their ID can ride fare-free on all Pierce Transit services including bus, SHUTTLE paratransit, Runner, and Rideshare (vanpool). When the shutdown ends, the transit agencies plan to resume collecting fares from federal employees.

Madigan Gate Closure Transit Connector Service

As of Tuesday, October 28, the Joint Base Lewis/McChord – Madigan gate has closed in all directions for a construction project that will last through February 2026.

During this time, Pierce Transit’s Route 206 will not be serving Madigan Hospital; it will remain in Tillicum on Berkeley Avenue & Washington Street at the Route 206 bus stop. Customers heading to and from Madigan Hospital will be using a Pierce Transit “Madigan Connector” that will serve Madigan Hospital, with a temporary bus stop located at 15404 Union Avenue, around the corner from the Route 206 stop on Berkeley Avenue.

Share the Ride and Save on Your Commute

Start a new Pierce Transit Rideshare (vanpool) group with five or more people and everyone rides free for two months. This offer is valid for those who haven’t ridden with Pierce Transit Rideshare in the last year.

A rideshare is a group of 3-15 people who share their commute to and from work using a vehicle from their local transit agency. Each group has an assigned driver, backup driver and bookkeeper.

How Do You Ride?

“Transit is and has been my favorite way to get around Pierce County. As a student in Seattle, I can easily take the 594 Bus to Commerce Street and take the T Line up the hill to Wright Park—without worrying about driving in traffic, spending money on gas, or paying for parking. Because of transit, I’m able to spend more time with my friends and family.”
