Benefits of Recreation Subsidies for Families with Low-Income

Research indicates that participating in recreational activities has numerous benefits for physical health and improving quality of life, however families and individuals living with low-income are less likely to participate in recreational activities or engage in physical activity. Recreation fee assistance programs are one way to reduce barriers for families to participate.

To assess the outcomes of recreation subsidies for residents living with low income, researchers with the University of Toronto and University of Alberta conducted semi-structured interviews with families in Mississauga, Ontario that were approved for the Active Assist program. Participants indicated the program made it financially possible to participate in recreational activities, become involved in their community and reduce isolation. The program also provided opportunities for their children to be physically active.

Eligible Windsor-Essex residents can also access recreational subsidies through the P2P funded Recreation Assistance Program. The aim of the program is to improve physical activity and participation in the community for residents living with poverty.

Neighbourhoods Program Launches with Strong Community Support

We are excited to share the success of the Neighbourhoods Program launch events, hosted by the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative and United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex County. Held in Downtown Windsor (east of Ouellette Avenue), Bruce Park Neighbourhood, West Windsor and Leamington, these free neighbourhood events welcomed residents and officially kicked off the program in each area.

The strong resident turnout and enthusiasm reflect the deep community connections our partners bring to this work. We look forward to seeing how they continue to collaborate with residents to strengthen and improve their neighbourhoods.

AFFORDABLE TRANSPORTATION

Tackling Transportation Insecurity in Windsor-Essex



Transportation insecurity, when people struggle to access reliable, affordable transit, is one of the most common hardships facing low-income households. A recent study from the University of Michigan found that 36% of Detroit residents experience transportation insecurity, more than twice the national average. The study introduced the Transportation Security Index, a tool to help cities identify where transit investments are most needed.

In Windsor-Essex, the Affordable Pass Program (APP) helps address this challenge by offering a discounted rate on monthly bus passes. As Pathway to Potential leads a cross-sectoral study of the APP in Windsor, we are exploring how this program supports residents in getting to work, school and essential services, while identifying ways to improve access and equity across our region.

Did You Know?

Pathway to Potential has adopted the Government of Canada’s Quality of Life Framework as a guideline to measure the impact of programming for Windsor-Essex Residents living with poverty. The framework includes five overall domains that contribute to quality of life for Canadians: Prosperity, Health, Society, Environment, and Good Governance.
