2024 AIA MICHIGAN PRESIDENT

Greetings fellow AIA Members.

It’s that time of the year when summer is winding down and for some of us it’s the back-to-school routine that brings on cooler weather, shorter amounts of daylight and a more routine schedule.  For some of us it’s also time for our valued summer interns to return to classes to continue their educational pursuits. As I reflect on this time when I was going back to classes in late August, it reminds me the importance of finishing the pursuit and if your goal is to become licensed, to finish the education requirements with the goal of becoming an architect.   I recall a few classmates, often joking, why would I need to get licensed, why bother, I don’t want to sign and seal documents, etc… Looking back I am glad I didn’t fall into that advice and pursued licensure with the thought of why not become a licensed architect? As we give advice to the future architects, interns, dreamers, lets encourage them if they want to be an architect to pursue licensure. As a reminder from my previous article that one of the main goals of Michigan Architectural Foundation (MAF) is to fund architectural students in their educational pursuits. The scholarships are well funded by our members and available each year to needy students.  We look forward to seeing many of the students applying for these scholarships.

On the heels of our Mid Summer Conference, for all those who attended, it was indeed a Grand event filled with great speakers, project examples, thoughtful advice, great weather and most importantly camaraderie with our fellow architects, contractors, suppliers and affiliates.  Another big thank you to all of our sponsors. STRATEGIC COUNCIL UPDATE

Living in the Great Lakes State it is easy to forget how precious freshwater is. While the Great Lakes contain 20% of the world’s

surface freshwater, only one-half of one percent (0.5%) of the earth's water is available freshwater. If you think we don’t need to

worry about water in Michigan, think again: from plans to pump water out of the lakes, to ‘forever chemicals’ proliferation, to

climate refugees, there are growing pressures on Michigan’s freshwater resource.

How is your work as an architect impacting this critical resource? The Strategic Council Climate Study Group’s August 5th presentation reinforced how important this topic is for architects in Michigan. Read more.

YOUNG ARCHITECT UPDATE

Hello!

I hope everyone is enjoying what appears to be the last few weeks of great weather before we transition into fall. Did anyone do any traveling this summer?

I was able to travel up to Mackinac Island for the Mid Summer Conference this year. There were some great presentations, including one on the LIFTbuild project by Barton Malow. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed their time on the island and was able to catch one of the historic walking tours or the boat tour under the bridge! If you missed out - be sure to attend next year! Read more.
