Crimson version of the 2017 Moroccan Mystery Quilt
October begins a very busy few weeks here at the Studio. It starts with our in-shop and online anniversary sales, Quilt Market in Houston and final preparations for the Quilters' Quest shop hop.

We have so much to tell you in this month's newsletter so make sure you scroll all the way through to learn about a new quilt, new products, tips, sales and, most important, the final clue for our Moroccan Mystery quilt.

Red Fort Quilt

Red Fort in Twilight
While the Taj Mahal may be the most popular tourist attraction in India, I've always been drawn to the beautiful Red Fort with its sandstone walls and intricate architectural designs. You can read about this amazing structure in my blog. It inspired me to make a quilt named after it and now, several years later, I've redesigned it for you.

Featuring fabrics from my new Malam V batik collection, Red Fort, creates a fabulous 3D illusion from sixty-degree diamonds with the specific placement of lights, mediums and darks in each block.

This quilt comes in two colorways, Twilight and Sunset. It is perfect for hand piecing or can be easily pieced by machine.

Quilt Tip - Piecing Diamonds

Some people shy away from diamonds because they fear the inset seams or joining multiple points.  Several years ago, with that in mind, I created my Perfect Cut 60° Tools to make the job of cutting diamonds quick and easy.

On my Tips and Lessons page, you'll find these tutorials with information to help you with Red Fort or any diamond quilt:

Small Business Spotlight - Powpow Neck Warmers

Hand-piecing on an airplane is often a conversation starter and last year it led to a fascinating one with Karen Brewer, the founder of Powpow. With a career in marketing and computer technology, Karen became fascinated with Etsy and thought, "I can do this!" As a former ski instructor, she wanted to create something that would help people get outside and want to stay there. Powpow and her neck warmers were born.

Karen sewed the first 300 neck warmers herself but her products are now sewn by a nearby family-owned business in northern California. Just as we quilters do, Karen tries to use every scrap with the goal of zero material waste.

Powpow dual-layer neck warmers are reversible and combine soft micro-fleece and colorful max-dri stretch material. I wear mine both indoors and out in the winter. Many quilters develop neck pain because of all the bending over we do. I find that the added warmth to my neck really helps to sooth those aching muscles throughout the day whether I'm indoors or out. One member of my staff, an outdoor enthusiast, says she pulls it up over her nose and mouth on frigid days and when she gets warm, it easily fits in a pocket.

Powpow neck warmers make wonderful holiday gifts. You can see the selection we carry here
