October 2019 Newsletter

Welcome to the monthly news. There are many ways for you to connect with God and with our neighbors at LCOC and beyond.  You are invited to share this news with new neighbors and others who may be interested in hearing what God is doing through the people and ministry of LCOC. Also bring others to come and be a part of these various ministry opportunities!

GATHER    GROW    GIVE    GO

Pastor Darcy

Looking back---2019 has been a year where we have connected with the past as we celebrated 50 years of God's faithfulness through the ministry of LCOC. I invite you to take another look at the story boards in the hallway leading to and in the fellowship hall. The pictures tell some of the stories of the people and experiences that God has used equip people to grow as committed disciples of Christ.

Moving forward---2019 is also a year where we connect with the future as we begin our New Connections campaign. Through this initiative, over the next three years, we plan to engage at least 50 new people in the joy and privilege of serving in God's mission through LCOC and to raise funds
to support people in their faith development and to equip LCOC in ministry.

As we embark on these exciting possibilities, I invite you to remember what God wants FOR you. God wants to be in relationship with you and for you to know of God's love, peace, mercy, forgiveness, joy, hope and more. God wants FOR you to set your hope on "...God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, 19 thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life" (1Timothy 6:17-19)

What does LCOC want FOR you? We want YOU "take hold of the life that is really life" (1st Timothy, 6:19). This life is about knowing, living, and sharing the story of God's love, peace, mercy, forgiveness, joy, hope and more. To support you growing in this life that God and LCOC want FOR you, each family will be given a four-week devotional called Whole-life Generosity Devotional: Living in Relationship, Gratitude and Release. Then beginning on October 20th, we will begin a special sermon series that will focus on this devotional:

                              October 20          Living with God
                              October 27           Living with Gratitude
                              November 3        Living with Faith
                             November 10       Living with Generosity

Praying for you and LCOC as we grow in the life that is really life!

Cou n cil President

In our world today, we have special days for a variety of causes and celebrations and October is no exception with special days set aside for Autism Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Healthy Lung Month being just a few.

October 2019 brings another special time with LCOC kicking off our New Connections Campaign. This three-year campaign will be focused on engaging 50 new active people and raising funds to carry on our ministries into the future. This will allow us to connect even more with others, and share God's love to grow in faith and serve by offering more education and development and enhancing our facility to make it even more welcoming.

There will be many opportunities to invite others, pledge your support, and get involved not only in parts of the New Connections Campaign itself, but the ministries both old and new that we will do as we move forward.

Remember, people matter...you matter...the fact that God created us in his image is a testimony to that. So, as we kick off New Connections, reflect on God's word in John 3:16, 1 Peter 5:7, and Psalm 55:22 about how much he cares for us and all our brothers and sisters in this world. And remember that to be a connection is to be not only a contact and a messenger, but also an ally, a friend, a mentor.

Review all the ways that LCOC invites and nurtures you (Bible study, prayer groups, education hours, worship, fellowship, and community service ministries), and share that with those around you.

Thanks to all those who have been connecting and giving over the last month, especially all those who were a blessing on God's Work/Our Hands Day and at the Bull Run Troubadours Concert -both benefiting ACTS.

In thanks,
Randy

GROW
in our relationship with God through prayer, Bible Study, and service
Fall Education Series:
Come and be a part of the engaging conversation as we explore the Biblical understanding of stewardship with Dr. Mark Alan Powell who is a New Testament Professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Ohio.

Stewardship means "belonging to God" - all that we are and all that we have comes from God. We are grateful to God for it all, and responsible to God for how we use it. There is a connection between stewardship and spirituality: generous giving as a spiritual discipline helps us to grow in Christ.

Evangelism

God richly blessed the cooperation between LCOC, Mustard Seed and Iglesia Palabra Viva congregations for God's Work/Our Hands Day where many folks went out and helped clean up Cloverdale Road while another group decorated bags and boxes for children's snacks and household items for those in the ACTS shelters (234 pounds of materials!).

The projects were preceded by a joint worship service and followed by food and fellowship time with the three congregations which were very uplifting. Thanks to all who brought in items for ACTS, helped with the luncheon, participated in the service projects, and offered support in a variety of ways!

We will continue to find more ways to connect and serve as we kick off the New Connections Campaign on October 20th. We still need some folks to join in on creating exciting visual images that will capture this campaign's purpose: developing the faith of our members and those we meet, connecting with others to share God's love and serve him by serving them. We are working on an awesome video to help us visualize how we have been blessed and how much more we can accomplish as we move forward.

Please make the services, events, and opportunities to serve offered part of your plans and pledge your support of time, talents, and resources. New Connections is not just a campaign-it is a way of thinking and living.
God's Word says: "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." 2 Corinthians 9:11

With thanks,
Patti
