August 3, 2019
Customers Luc and Fabienne stopped by the Studio before returning home to Belgium.
It has been very hot here in Virginia the past few weeks and in many other spots around the world. In trying to look at the positive side, I was able to work on my quilt for the upcoming Quilters' Quest with the extra time spent indoors.

Summer often brings visitors from across the country and around the world to the Washington area and to the Studio.  It is always fun to chat with them, learn about their hometowns and what quilting projects they are working on.  We are just about 20 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. so we hope you stop by when you are in the area or passing through.

In this month's newsletter, we have two classic quilts now featuring my Malam batiks, news of happenings in the Studio, quilt tips and clue #5 of our Block of the Month quilt, Stellaris.
New Best of Malam Batik Quilts
Two of my favorite quilt patterns, Snowbirds and Harlequin Charm, have been redesigned to feature my Best of Malam Spindle Strips. These color-shaded batik rolls of 2 ½"  x 40" strips make piecing quick while some foundation piecing ensures accuracy.  And, as a bonus, when making Snowbirds or the small Harlequin Charm, you have enough fabric left from the Spindle Strips to make another of these Best of Malam quilts.

Both Snowbirds and Harlequin Charm quilt kits are available in four colorways.  Snowbirds is available in one size (34" x 48") and your choice of either a dark or light background.  Harlequin Charm is available in two sizes, small (60" x 60") and large (102" x 102"). Patterns for all are FREE DOWNLOADS.

Visit our website for more information on these new Best of Malam kits, Snowbirds and Harlequin Charm.
Start Your Planning for the Quilters' Quest
We shop owners have been planning for months and it is not too soon for you to do the same. Our annual shop hop, Quilters' Quest, begins October 11th.  The Quest encourages quilters to explore 10 quilt shops in Maryland and Northern Virginia over the course of 10 days. For more information on the Quest and to see our entertaining video, visit the Quilters' Quest website.

If you would like an alternative to driving yourself, the Studio will once again have two buses. Our two-day trips include a coach tour bus with a professional driver, continental breakfast and early-bird shopping before the bus departs each day, optional box lunches and a bus hostess who will keep things fun with games, prizes and more.

Our buses are filling up.  For more information on the Studio buses and to reserve your seat, click here.

Quilt Tip - The Secret to Success is in the Dots
In this month's lesson for the Stellaris quilt, you will be sewing inset seams. Many quilters tend to shy away from these but it really is easier than you think. Your assembly will also involve joining six points.  The secret to both of these is in the dots, marking them and starting at one dot and stopping at the next.

Besides the video with the lesson, I always have both written and video lessons on my website. Visit "Sewing Tips" to learn about inset seams and "Hand Piecing" for lessons on joining six (and more) points.
2019 BOM, Stellaris - Lesson #5
Last month you assembled the quilt's corners giving them a distinctive look by using the mini-stripe fabric.  This month watch the stars come together as you assemble their components from Lesson #3.
This is a free program available to just our newsletter subscribers. Each newsletter will have a link to a new written and video lesson plus you will have access to all past lessons.
