MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
THE WATER TREADMILL IS HERE!
The long awaited Hudson Aquatic Water Treadmill has made its way to Illinois! After a long few months of delays, we finally had our Hudson Aquatic water treadmill delivered to us on March 2, 2021!

Currently we are just waiting for the water chiller as the heat generator was delivered March 20th.

Once we have this equipment installed we will be able to get the water of the treadmill to the desired temperature for both warm and cold salt water which allows us to tailor our treading to the needs of your horse!

We are absolutely thrilled to help serve our equestrian community with state-of-the-art equipment in order to get their teammate back stronger than ever!

Contact us if you would love to utilize our services, or if you would like to book a tour of the facility to see if our program may suit your horse's needs.

GETTING THE "IN" ON ULCERS WITH OUR GUT HEALTH COLUMN. NEW TOPICS AND MANAGEMENT TIPS FOR AN ULCER PRONE HORSE
Treatment Options & the Benefits of Scoping

In our last newsletter we outlined how there are two types of ulcers that are determined by the location within the stomach, which are either squamous or glandular ulcers. This month we will do a brief outline of treatment options and what products in our opinion are best!

One of the main reasons it’s a good idea to scope your horse, instead of blindly treat them is because you may not be using the best medicine for the type of ulcer they have. Gastrogard (which has the exact same ingredients as UlcerGard) is used most frequently for the treatment of squamous ulcers. The main ingredient, omeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that deceases the amount of stomach acid produced, giving the squamous ulcers time to heal.

It’s important to only use Gastrogard or Ulcergard in the treatment of ulcers as compounded omeprazole is not an equivalent and it's not FDA regulated. As these products are more expensive, it may be tempting to try other less expensive or generic forms of omeprazole. However, without the FDA approval, you cannot be sure of the potency or effectiveness of the product.

If your horse only has glandular ulcers, they will likely be given Gastrogard and sucralfate or misoprostol. Once your horse has completed treatment, it’s important to re-scope. Why? If you treated your horse and did not confirm they are clear of ulcers, you may stop treatment prematurely and end up in the same boat you started in.

DID YOU KNOW:
It is impossible to scope hind-gut ulcers? The scope would have to be about 90 feet long in order to do so!
