It's that time of year that our Rotary Club has the heart-warming opportunity to spread a little holiday cheer!

The holidays are quickly approaching and our plans to provide toys, clothes, holiday meal and a party with Santa & Mrs. Claus for some amazing families at Samaritan Inn, YMCA and PISD Title 1 schools is just around the corner.

This Thursday we are seeking your assistance in the form of a financial commitment or a donation.

With Thanksgiving next week and our shopping excursion the following week, it would be helpful to know where we stand financially.

Please consider whether you will be in a position to help financially or with the gift of your time to volunteer for one or more of the outings.

Gift envelopes will be on the tables at Rotary this week.  Please drop the envelope off with Karen if you can make a commitment or a donation on Thursday.

I f you can volunteer your time, please email me at Camille.ussery@bthbank.com
to let me know if you can join us.

Shopping - Thursday, Dec 1st at 7:30am at Walmart at 1700 Dallas Parkway on DNT and Park Blvd.

Rotary International Service Partnership Opportunity
The Rotary Club of Dallas, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Accra West of Ghana, Africa, is seeking Clubs interested in partnering for an international service project that will provide clean, safe drinking water and dental hygiene clinics to four rural villages in Ghana Africa.  Dates for the trip are May 22 - June 1, 2017.

Last year, we incorporated dental clinics in the villages where we dedicated the water wells.  In a country of ~26 million, there are only 120 dentists.  The average cost to visit a dentist is the equivalent of a month and a half's salary.  Needless to say, the dental clinics were well received!

This will be the Rotary Club of Dallas' fourth trip to Ghana.  We have an integrated support system on the ground, thanks to our Club Member - Dr. Elizabeth Acquaye-Kwarteng, a native of Ghana.

As part of this Rotary International Global Grant, the Rotary Club of Dallas foundation has committed $15,000 USD.  We are seeking financial support of an additional $18,000 - for a total project cost of ~ $100,000.

Members are welcome to join the trip to dedicate the wells and to participate in the hands-on dental clinics - for the Rotary experience of a lifetime.

Please contact me, or Tom Franklin (tfrank33@att.net or 972.978.3892), or Denise Demonbreun (denise@dallasrotary.org or 214.742.5451) with any questions.

Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,
One New Polio Case reported this week.  See the attached report .
What is that Polio Eradication Picture?    It's of a child being vaccinated in Pakistan.  The challenges to Polio eradication there are great - but much progress is being made!

Could we see the last reported Polio case in 2016?
Polio Survivors - I was recently asked how many Polio Survivors there are in the world and in the United States.  I didn't know, so I asked the expert, Ann Lee Hussey, President of the Rotary Polio Survivors Action Group - www.RotaryPolioSurvivors.org .  She replied - "It is estimated that somewhere between 10-20 million polio survivors exist worldwide, of those approximately 750,000 live in the US.  There is no accurate data."  I also asked about the numbers still living in iron lungs.  She replied "I do not know the number still living in iron lungs - but there are some.  Respiratory issues affect many survivors when post-polio syndrome sets in, so many will find themselves using portable respirators especially at night while sleeping.  Thanks Ann Lee

Awards!  In addition to recently being awarded the highest four-star overall rating and a perfect 100 out of 100 score for accountability and transparency by the charity watch-dog Charity Navigator, last week, the 30,000 member strong Association of Fundraising Professionals named The Rotary Foundation as the 2016 Outstanding Foundation!
Polio Eradication Fundraising  - A continuing column featuring a weekly Polio Eradication Fundraising Idea.
The next five (17-22) Polio Fundraising Ideas are Rotary's Five Talking Points to Promote Polio Fundraising - When asked why we must continue to fund raise and advocate for Global Polio Eradication when only a handful of cases remain:  Second - We Must Protect Our Gains - To end Polio, we must continue to keep all of the post-endemic countries Polio-free, including up to sixty countries that remain at high risk due to conflict, population migration, or weak health systems.  The Polio cases reported in Nigeria this year were a wake-up call to remain vigilant worldwide and to respond quickly to any outbreaks.
Quote of the day - "When you win, nothing hurts."  New York Jets Quarterback, Joe Namath

The Final Three Endemic Countries:
Pakistan -   One new Polio cases reported this week.  Seventeen Polio cases reported in 2016 with 54 cases recorded in 2015  The most recent case, with the onset of paralysis on 11/03/16 was from the Sujawal, Sundh Southwest of Karachi.  One new Polio-positive environmental sample was collected last week.     In Pakistan, both the oral polio vaccine and the inactivated poliovirus vaccine are being used hand in hand to boost immunity; and committed healthcare workers are going to great lengths to build trust and to ensure every child is vaccinated.
Afghanistan - No new Polio cases reported this week.  Twelve Polio cases reported in 2016 with 20 cases recorded in 2015. The most recent cases, with an onset of paralysis on 09/28/16 was from Paktika - near the Pakistan border.  No new Polio-positive environmental samples have been collected in Afghanistan in 2016 .

Nigeria - No new Polio cases reported this week.   Four Polio cases reported in 2016 - with no cases reported in 2015.  The most recent case was reported on 8/2016 on Borno State.

Importation Countries - Ethiopia (0-2015, 1-2014), Cameroon (0-2015, 5-2014), Somalia (0-2015, 5-2014), Iraq  (0-2015, 2- 2014), Syria (0-2015,1-2014), & Equatorial Guinea (0-2015, 5-2014) .

Our Goal is Global Polio Eradication!!
