Navigating Back to School: Tips for Divorced and Separated Families

As the back-to-school season draws near, it brings with it a mix of anticipation and stress—especially for families adjusting to co-parenting after a divorce or separation. At Kantaras Law, we recognize the unique challenges this time of year can pose. Here are some practical strategies to help both parents and children start the school year with confidence and cooperation:

1. Prioritize Clear, Consistent Communication

Open and respectful communication is essential. Coordinate on key details such as school schedules, transportation arrangements, and upcoming events. Regular check-ins can help ensure that both parents stay aligned and avoid unnecessary confusion.

2. Revisit Your Parenting Plan

The new school year is an ideal time to review your parenting agreement. Make sure it accurately reflects your children’s current needs, including changes in school routines or extracurricular commitments. Updating your plan can help prevent future misunderstandings.

3. Divide School-Related Costs Fairly

Talk about how expenses like school supplies, uniforms, and activity fees will be handled. Clarifying financial responsibilities early can minimize stress and promote fairness between co-parents.

4. Support Your Child’s Emotional Transition

New routines and environments can be emotionally taxing for children—especially in co-parenting situations. Provide reassurance, listen to their concerns, and create a supportive environment that fosters resilience and security.

5. Show Up—Together, When Possible

Attending school functions or parent-teacher conferences together, when appropriate, sends a strong message of unity and support. If that’s not possible, coordinate your participation so your child feels equally supported by both parents.

6. Embrace Flexibility and Patience

Schedules may shift and unexpected challenges can arise. Practicing patience and maintaining a flexible mindset can go a long way in reducing tension and keeping the focus on what matters most—your child’s well-being.

7. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Legal Support

If you encounter obstacles or need to revisit legal agreements, professional guidance can make a significant difference. The team at Kantaras Law is here to help you navigate co-parenting complexities with compassion and expertise.

Expert Tips

*Stay Child-Focused During Disputes

When emotions run high, it’s easy to lose sight of what matters most: your child’s well-being. Keep conversations and decisions centered around what’s best for them and avoid putting them in the middle of adult conflicts.

*Respond Promptly to Your Attorney's Requests

Timely communication with your legal team helps your case move forward efficiently. Prompt responses allow your attorney to be fully prepared and better advocate on your behalf.

*Understand the Power of Temporary Orders

Temporary orders—regarding custody, support, or property use—can set the tone for your case. Take them seriously. Courts often look at how well each party follows these orders when making final decisions.

Celebrating victories that uplift our clients and define our commitment to excellence at Kantaras Law. Here are some recent triumphs:

  • The immigration team was successful in assisting clients from Germany and Thailand obtain Legal Permanent Residence.

  • In a recent case win, our team successfully defended a mother’s right to remain with her children after the father filed a motion for their return and a pick-up order. We fought hard to protect our client’s custody, presenting strong evidence and legal arguments to the court. The judge ultimately denied the father's motion, allowing the children to stay safely in their mother’s care.

It’s wins like these that remind us why we do what we do.

K. Dean Kantaras made a donation to the Funding Florida Legal Aid's Children's Legal Services Center. While this organization is partially funded through the Florida Bar's IOTA program, they are underfunded. This direct donation ensures that children and families in need received direct support for their family law matters where they otherwise may not have been able to afford private counsel.

Undocumented Immigrants Facing Deportation

A memorandum issued on July 8, 2025, by Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons directs immigration officers to detain undocumented immigrants throughout the entirety of their removal proceedings. This new policy applies to individuals who entered the U.S. without authorization over the past several decades, regardless of the administration in power at the time.

Under the revised guidelines, bond hearings—once a common option for many immigrants—are now largely eliminated. Parole will only be considered in rare cases, at the discretion of ICE officers. The shift stems from a new interpretation of immigration law that requires mandatory detention following arrest.
