Chair's Corner: Be Safe and Stay Well

Chair Krista Kippenberger with Focus on Health Chiropractic reminds us that during this time, we are all going through this and none of us need to experience it alone.

We encourage all of our Women's Network members to reach out and connect with each other via phone, email, social channels, etc., to ensure that you are staying connected to our community during this uncertain time.
Women's Network has also implemented some changes with our community's health and safety in mind, such as moving all of our upcoming committee meetings to virtual meetings and postponing our upcoming events.

Important Updates for Women's Network Members
Women's Network Event and Program Postponements

Following the recommendations of the CDC and Chamber staff, the Chamber’s Executive Board carefully decided that we will be postponing and rescheduling Chamber events through May 15. 

This means that we will be postponing all Women’s Network events currently scheduled between now and then, which include:

  • Leadership Development Roundtables on March 20 and April 22
  • New Member Welcome on April 9
  • The Spotlight Luncheon on April 16
  • Roses for Mentors Delivery on May 5
  • ATHENA International Awards Banquet on May 14
  • Changing the Odds Spring Seminar on May 15

We will be rescheduling these programs for future dates once we have resumed our events and programming.

We will continue holding all of our upcoming committee meetings, though they will be held virtually or at the discretion of our Chamber staff. Please continue to check our monthly newsletter and our website,, for more information and updates as they come available.

While events may be postponed, the Chamber is operating for our business community. If there is anything that Women’s Network can do for you, please let us know. We understand times are hard right now, but we are here for you and our community will get through this together.

  • Carrie D. Francke Scholarship

The Carrie D. Francke Scholarship is open to applicants through May 1, 2020. Each year, Women’s Network provides a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Carrie D. Francke. Carrie was ambitious, completing a political science degree at MU in three years, followed by earning journalism and law degrees. She served as Senator John Danforth’s press secretary, as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Missouri, and on the University of Missouri Board of Curators. She died in a tragic car accident in 1989 at the age of 34. Carrie served on the Women’s Network Steering Committee.

  • Debin Benish Award

Debin Benish started Delta Systems Group at a time when women were not encouraged to venture out on their own, not to mention in a technology field. During her 18 years in business, Debin and her staff trained thousands of people in Mid- Missouri on many different software programs and provided computer network support to hundreds of companies.In addition to achieving great success in her company, Debin was actively involved in the Chamber and Women’s Network. She served on the Chamber Board of Directors, Accreditation Task Force, Business Conference and Showcase Committee, Government Affairs, Education, Leadership Columbia, Women’s Network Business Owners Committee, and Ambassadors.To honor Debin Benish’s memory of volunteering and supporting small businesses, the Women’s Network, in conjunction with Delta Systems Group, selects a businesswoman who has achieved great success in her business to receive the annual Debin Benish Outstanding Businesswoman Award.

Women's Network Leadership Positions Open!
Women’s Network invites members to apply for leadership positions!

We will be filling three Steering Committee positions and a number of Co-Chair positions.

Co-Chairs and Steering Committee members: benefit from gaining leadership experience while serving next to other influential leaders in Columbia (as well as leading their committees), help in setting goals for each committee at the beginning of the program years, and identify opportunities for expansion and improvement of Women’s Network!

Steering | 3 years | Begins July 1, 2020
Co-Chair | 2 years | Begins July 1 , 2020

Explanation of Roles
Co-Chairs are the leaders of the committees. They help to encourage committee involvement by working to delegate tasks to the committee in an effort to achieve committee goals. Outside of committee meetings, a few of a Co-Chairs’ tasks might be:
  • Communication with speakers and partner agencies when it pertains to committee projects or events
  • Sending emails, checking-in on projects, touching base with the Women’s Network Director and Steering Committee when needed
  • Attending meetings when they pertain to events or programs

Steering Committee Members
The Women’s Network Steering Committee sets policy and ensures the division’s efforts align with overall mission and goals. Steering Committee members act as a guiding post in support of the co-chairs. They will also report back to the Steering Committee any issues or opportunities that the Co-Chairs inform them of, to maintain cohesiveness within the committees. Outside of committee meetings, a few Steering Committee tasks might be:
  • Check in with Co-Chairs or assist in decision-making/problem-solving situations
  • Attend Committee Leadership meetings when decisions or tasks need to be made quicker than committee meetings allow
  • Emailing or corresponding with Director of Women’s Network when needed

Monthly commitment:
  • 1 monthly meeting for your respective leadership positions (Co-Chair Committee, or Steering Committee)
  • Attend, when possible, WN events and/or programming

Committee Spotlight
Special Events

The Special Events Committee is the event planning committee for Women’s Network. This committee is in charge of several large events throughout the year including: Women’s Network fall and spring mixers, the ATHENA International Awards Banquet, Roses for Mentors and the Women’s Network Holiday Party.

The Special Events Committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month at noon.
