The Present Illness:

American Health Care and Its Afflictions

CCHEq member Martin Shapiro, MD, PhD, MPH, recently led two discussions on the Cornell Ithaca campus regarding the flaws and future of the U.S. healthcare system. The events were sponsored by CCHEq, the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and the Cornell Sloan Student Association.

Dr. Shapiro shared the highlights of his recently published book, “The Present Illness: American Health Care and Its Afflictions,” where he dissects how a dysfunctional system is shaped and reinforced and discourages reform. He advocates a sweeping agenda to create a more humane, effective, and just system. Shapiro cautions that overhauling the system is daunting, but a piecemeal approach will be undermined by those who benefit from the status quo.

Dr. Shapiro is a physician, historian, health services researcher, and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research for 25 years.

TALK TITLE:

"Addressing Lung Cancer Risk among Chinese Americans"

TALK ABSTRACT:

Research has shown that Chinese Americans (CAs) are less likely to participate in early detection cancer screening compared to other Americans. Additionally, older CAs have higher rates of lung cancer compared to other Asian subgroups in the US. To address this issue, it is important to understand the lung cancer risk and the barriers to screening among the older, underserved Chinese American population. After this presentation, the audience will be informed of: (1) smoking rates and health outcomes among CAs; (2) general cancer screening rates and predictors among CAs; (3) eligibility rates for LDCT screening and attitudes and beliefs towards screening among CAs; and (4) the development and primary testing of the Lung Decision Coaching Tool (LDC-T) among CAs and their providers.
