Disability Management Training | |
Disability Management in Unionized Organizations
Various aspects of labour relations impact disability management, including the collective agreement and provincial labour relations act. Memorandums of agreement and letters of intent used in establishing programs and joint committees will be examined. Dispute resolution in a union setting will be explored.
The purpose of this module is to provide an understanding of the rationale for unions, how they are organized, and their activities in protecting workers, including workers with disabilities.

Mental Health Issues, Rehabilitation and Return to Work
A brief overview of mental health issues in the workplace is provided along with a more in-depth focus on stress and depression.
Participants will explore symptoms, treatments and disability aspects of stress and depression and strategies for assisting individuals with stress- and depression-related illnesses to return to work.
Disabilities that may have a mental health component and the biopsychosocial impact of disabilities will be considered.

OHS Proactive Inspection Program |
Each year, the Government of Alberta's OHS Proactive Inspection Program focuses on specific industry sectors, employers, or types of work in order to monitor compliance with legislation.
In 2023/24, OHS will be monitoring the municipal industry code 95104 - Cities. Areas of focus will include violence and harassment, musculoskeletal disorders, exposure to harmful substances, and noise exposure. OHS will also target worksite education for 9 sections of the OHS Code. Visit the OHS Proactive Inspection Program page for more details or to review reports from previous years.

AMHSA is pleased to introduce SPARK, an innovative new program to support the psychological health and safety initiatives of municipal government members.
Join us for a free webinar where Jesse Adams President and Founder of Ember Experience will share insights about the evolving municipal work environment and introduce SPARK. A product designed to support Alberta municipalities as they work to implement strategies, tools and resources for building psychologically safe workplaces.
Attendees of these sessions will learn about shifts in municipal work environments, leadership approaches, and employee expectations; understand what the SPARK program is and how it can help their workplace; and will be able to ask questions about SPARK and other workplace challenges related to the employee experience.

| Small Employer COR (SECOR) Changes |
Attention SECOR holders! AMHSA has adopted the 2023 Partnerships SECOR audit instrument and the requirements related to the small employer program have changed.
We will be hosting a virtual SECOR Refresher on the morning of Thursday, May 25, 2023. The course runs from 8:30 am–12:00 pm and invitations have been sent to our small employer contacts.
Learn about the new requirements, the new audit tool (including two new elements), and options related to both self assessments and the use of external auditors. The session is open to both small employers and AMHSA-certified consultant auditors.

| The Working Mind First Responders - Virtual |
The Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) is partnering with the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) and TELUS Health to provide specialized training and tools to support rural and remote firefighters living with or at risk of post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSI).
The program is being made available free of charge to fire and rescue first responders who work in fire stations registered in rural and remote municipalities and small cities across Alberta.
