Maintaining Mental Fitness Season 3
|
|
The Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) will again host a free webinar series to support metal fitness for organizations and individuals in an endemic world. AMHSA is partnering with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), Alberta Municipalities, and Howatt HR Consulting to produce the educational series.
Social and political events have shaped and redefined many workplace cultures during the COVID-19 pandemic. As people experience the collision of differing perspectives, behaviours, and states of mental health that have emerged over the past two years, organizations are challenged to adjust to new realities.
Season 3 will feature discussions examining the key strategies and behaviours that leaders, employees, and workers can practice to maintain mental fitness during the transition from a pandemic to an endemic work environment.
Webinars are presented and moderated by mental health subject matter experts from across Canada. Topics include how to manage stress by proactively tackling issues, being prepared to deliver bad news, communicating decisions with empathy, and modeling behaviours that will help everyone move forward towards a shared purpose.
Commencing September 20, MMF Season 3 will delve into three separate and relevant operational topics. Each plenary topic will feature three individual webinars, provide an overview of a key micro-skill to support workplace mental health, and will conclude with a Q & A for participants to ask questions.
Registration is free and open to all individuals and organizations, public and private, that are seeking practical ways to maintain mental health and wellbeing during a time when traditional workplace norms are being redefined.

OHS Legislation Search Tool Launched
|
The tool will enable employers and workers to more efficiently access and apply the health and safety rules that apply to their workplace. A searchable web-based version of the legislation means Albertans can quickly navigate and share individual sections from all three components of OHS legislation in one place. This format is designed for use on both computers and mobile devices.
The search tool contains a word-for-word transfer of the OHS Act, regulation and code, as it appears in the Alberta Queen’s Printer.

Update on OHS Code Changes
|
Labour and Immigration is in the process of reviewing the OHS Code. As part of this review, the department conducted technical working groups in the fall of 2020 on some parts of the code for the initial phase of the review, and also conducted a survey in the spring of 2021 to get input from employers, workers, and health and safety professionals. Since that time, the department has been reviewing the feedback and drafting proposed changes to the code.
The technical review of the survey feedback has affected the timing of updates to the OHS Code. The department plans to present the changes for government approval in the fall of 2022 and have them take effect sometime in 2023. The changes may not cover all 13 parts of the code identified in the initial phase review survey. Once the government approves the changes, they will be publicly shared with all Albertans.

|
Nicole is the first recipient of the AMHSA-UNB Scholarship, having won the award in 2020. We asked her about her experiences with the certificate program:
I found it was simple to fit time into my schedule to work on assignments as it was all self-directed. I liked that most of the courses were built on the knowledge and experience I already had, so it was challenging without being overwhelming. I also enjoyed that many of the final assignments were designed so you could share them with your co-workers or use the templates in the future.
Completing this certificate has already given me an opportunity within my organization as I am now working as the Town’s Health & Safety Advisor - a great opportunity to apply what I've learned.
