Winter Ready Seasonal Safety Initiative

Winter is here and so is our Winter Ready Seasonal Safety Initiative!

Winter in Alberta creates hazardous conditions no matter your industry or occupation. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, 50% of Alberta hospitalizations due to injury are from slips, trips, and falls (STF), while WCB-Alberta claim data shows that 30% of STF incidents are caused by weather conditions. You might expect that most of those injuries occur to tradespeople and those who work outdoors, but office workers see nearly as many injuries during the winter months, due to uncleared walkways, inappropriate footwear, and a lack of safe winter practices. AMHSA’s Winter Ready Seasonal Safety Initiative can help you plan your winter readiness campaign for all types of employees, with no-cost webinars, toolbox talks, and resources.

Register now for one of our upcoming webinars to learn more about the impact of winter conditions in both outside and office environments, strategies to identify and control winter hazards, and how to access AMHSA’s free injury prevention resources. Each webinar includes a 45-minute presentation and 15-minute Q&A with our Senior Health and Safety Advisor, Rob Rosete.

Register now for our Nov. 7 (10:00 – 11:00 am) or Nov. 29 (10:00 – 11:00 am) webinars.

Unable to attend? Webinar recordings will be available on our YouTube channel following each event.

Rural First Responder PTSI Training

First responders are subjected to upsetting, disturbing, difficult and sometimes traumatic incidents on a regular basis. That’s why a FREE, comprehensive, evidence-based mental health services program is available to fire and rescue, paramedics, emergency health care workers and police services personnel working in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Alberta.

This program is also the first of its kind to extend FREE mental health training and PTSI resources to family members of Alberta first responders. Once a first responder has participated in the training, an of-age family member is eligible to access virtual delivery of the program. (Note: Indigenous peoples attending the training may select an of-age community member to be an authorized family member delegate.)

Register now for one of our upcoming virtual sessions or contact us to arrange in-person or virtual sessions for your team.

Complexity-Based Scalable Audit (CBSA)Too

In September 2022, the Government of Alberta announced their plan to modernize the COR program. Work has continued over the past year, particularly by the Complexity-Based Scalable Audit (CBSA) Working Group. The Government of Alberta has released two documents on the OHS Resource Portal which provide information and updates related to the work of the CBSA:

Complexity-Based Scalable Audit (CBSA) Info Sheet including three-phase roadmap

Frequently Asked Questions: Complexity-Based Scalable Audit (CBSA) document which addresses changes and what isn’t changing, how complexity is measured, small employers, timelines, and implementation.

The next major milestone is the development of a CBSA prototype by March 2024. Once it is ready, the Certifying Partners, including AMHSA, will engage with their members to gather industry input into the CBSA’s final design. We anticipate this will take place next Spring, and we will be sure to include information about how to participate in the Auditor Update and the AMHSA Newsletter.

OHS Resources

The Government of Alberta has posted new or updated resources: quizzes on health and safety topics, ergonomics in the workplace, and updated eLearning, handbooks and templates for hazard assessment and control.
