ALAN T. WATERMAN AWARD


The NSF is seeking nominations for the Alan T. Waterman Award for exceptional early career investigators. This is the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Highest Honor. In addition to a medal, the awardee receives a grant of $1,000,000 to use over a five-year period for scientific research or advanced study in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, social, or other sciences at the institution of the recipient's choice.

Congratulations to Dr. Ranita Ray who's 2022 Gender & Society article titled “School as a Hostile Institution: How Black and Immigrant Girls of Color Experience the Classroom” has received multiple awards:


  • Winner, 2023, Arlene Kaplan Daniels Paper Award, Society for the Study of Social Problems.
  • Co-Winner, 2023, American Sociological Association's The Section on the Sociology of Sex and Gender’s Distinguished Article Award.  
  • Honorable Mention, 2023 American Sociological Association, The Section on Race, Gender and Class’ Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award

Congratulations to Dr. Peter Fawcett who has been elected as a Fellow of the The Geological Society of America.

Congratulations to the Second Chance Pell research team, which includes Dr. Noah Painter-Davis, Dr. Neil Greene, Em Ahrend, Elisha Allen, and Verlin Joseph, who have received approval to participate in the revised “Second Chance Pell Experiment” under the U.S. Department of Education’s Experimental Sites Initiative for 2023-24. This grant enables up to 12 incarcerated students to enroll full time at the University of New Mexico.

Khaled Bin Oli Bhuiyan

PhD Student

Evolutionary Anthropology


Congratulations to Khaled Bin Oli Bhuiyan who has received an NSF Research Experience for Graduate Students Grant. He will investigate the effects of markets on the timing of life history events among ni-Vanuatu. He will be joining Profs. Mattison and Wallace in Vanuatu this summer to engage in research linking variation in socio-ecologies to household demography and individual health and well-being.
