April 2022
Today is 401Gives Day!
The smallest state has got the biggest heart!
Today, all of RI is celebrating 401Gives Day, giving back to the philanthropic work of all nonprofits with the help of the United Way of Rhode Island. The RISPCA is excited to share that we are a part of this movement!

To participate, please consider telling your friends and family about us on 401Gives Day, donating, and learning more about our rich history fighting for a more humane animal society for over 150 years. Visit our 401Gives Day page here!

Please consider donating at 6:00am, 12:00pm, or 4:01pm to unlock matching $$ from the Rhode Island Foundation and Papitto Opportunity Connection.
Greetings!

Last month, I promised to share more examples of the Society’s recent work in this monthly message. I am happy to do that and I hope that you enjoy the following two stories, both of which had happy endings.

Bella: Bella, a sweet 15-year-old (or so) Chihuahua, came to our hardship boarding program after her owner was hospitalized. Unfortunately, the circumstances were such that her owner eventually realized that it would be best for Bella if she was placed in a new home. However, he wanted to see her one last time to say goodbye. Bella and I were allowed to visit with him in the nursing home and they spent some quiet, comfortable, quality time together before saying goodbye. When we visited, I promised her owner that we would find her a good home. To my surprise and dismay, Bella’s adoption posting generated no interest and she was not doing well in the shelter environment. I was more than a little bit worried that I made a promise I would not be able to keep. However, I brought Bella to the recording of the weekly Pick of the Litter segment we do on ABC-6 and conveyed her story to the public. The very next day I received a call from a lovely woman who had experience adopting older dogs who had been touched by Bella’s story. She came to the shelter and met with Bella and with me. Bella went home to a new, loving home that same day. I followed up with Bella’s new mom and I am happy to report that Bella is doing well. We passed the good news on to her former owner (who had seen Bella’s Pick of the Litter) and he was happy with the outcome.
Howie: Howie is a typical pandemic puppy, an active pure bred puppy (German Shepherd) who was purchased during the pandemic by an inexperienced pet owner. He was relinquished to us about 3 months ago at the age of 9 months because he was too much to handle. We arranged to transfer Howie to German Shepherd Rescue of New England and they will be providing him with breed specific training and will place him into a new home. We value our ongoing relationships with other humane organizations, particularly with the breed specific rescue organizations, who help us to find good homes for many of the more difficult animals we accept into the shelter and we are delighted to know that Howie will have a bright future.
While these two stories both ended well, I am concerned because Freddi, who was highlighted last month, still has not been adopted! He is currently in a foster home where he is doing well and we are hopeful that having a positive reference from his foster family will convince someone to offer him a home.  Last year we placed over 1,000 animals into new homes and, while every one of them received individual care and attention from our wonderful staff, few have been as popular as Freddi. We won’t give up on him!

Thank you for your continued support!

From Lily's Pad
I want to be up front about my intentions. Just so you will know, the goal of becoming a canine good citizen is not all that important to me and is not something that I expect to achieve any time soon! This may be a bit embarrassing for my human but from my perspective it is perfectly OK.  I am keeping up with my training but I value my independence and sometimes I just don’t feel like staying still for extended periods of time.

This is not to say that I am not making progress. I go to work at the office of the Rhode Island SPCA four days a week and I greet new people all the time and that takes discipline and self-restraint. You would be amazed by the number of meetings I have to sit through each week and how boring and tedious they can be. Most of the meetings are planning meetings for the Society’s new facility in Warwick that will be opening early in 2023 and they can be very detailed and technical. I make sure that everyone stays awake and focused during meetings with well-timed cuddles and nuzzles and an occasional lick on the hand. If the new facility is completed on time it will be because I was around to keep everyone on task! Stay tuned, the Society's new location is going to be really nice!

Thanks for all you do!

Lucky Paw-Leaf Clovers
Clovers, generosity, and more! During the month of March, our friends at Wave Federal Credit Union planted Paw-Leaf Clovers at both Warwick branches on our behalf. They collected donations benefiting the critical life-saving services here at the Rhode Island SPCA. Our supporters, with every donation made, autographed a Paw-Leaf Clover and grew the Wave FCU’s field of Paw-Leaves. This, in turn, grows our mission’s outreach!
Thank you Wave FCU for hosting Paw-Leaf Clovers for 3 years in a row!
Take Me Home!
Say hello to Pretty Girl!

Pretty Girl's personality is as stunning as her markings and she is ready to go to a home where she can run around then crash on your couch for hours on end. Pretty Girl has a lot of energy and is a lot of fun. Keep her entertained and she’ll be happy and ready to crash! She is super sweet and will kiss you all day if you let her; on the other hand, she will also steal your sandwich off the table if you let her. She would do best in a home with teens+ due to her unwillingness to recognize that she isn’t a 10lb lap dog. She would do best in a home as an only pet at this time, due to her over exuberance. Pretty Girl does also have some separation anxiety, which is being managed with medication. She just truly wants to be by your side and makes an excellent shot gun companion in the car or snuggle buddy on the couch.
Say hello to Coach!

Coach is a handsome seven year old mixed breed looking for his forever sunny spot! He loves spending time outdoors and would make the perfect adventure buddy…whether it’s headed to the beach for a romp on the sand or hiking through some wooded trails. He is quite shy at first but quickly warms up. He loves fetching tennis balls and would be happy as can be to do that for hours. In his previous home, Coach has shown that he would prefer to be the only animal.
Interested in adopting? Great! You are welcome to visit the RISPCA, fill out an application or email us at adoption@rispca.com with any questions. Thank-you!

About the Rhode Island SPCA ~ Founded in 1870, the Rhode Island SPCA is the oldest humane organization in the state of Rhode Island and the third oldest in the United States. As a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we rely on donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations, and we are not affiliated with any national humane organization.

We are the Rhode Island SPCA ~ There are many organizations throughout the country and the world that have “SPCA” and/or “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” as part of their name. We often hear from intended local donors who believed that they had made a donation to the Rhode Island SPCA but had mistakenly directed their donations to an unrelated organization.  The Rhode Island SPCA is an independent organization and we are not affiliated with any other SPCA. If you find our work to be worthwhile and plan to support our efforts, please be sure that you direct your contribution to the Rhode Island SPCA. ~ Thank you for your support!
