July 2023

Dear Residents & Community Members,

As usual, Summer is flying by! We hope this Monthly Update finds you well and enjoying the sunshine as we head into August. It's certainly been a busy, fun-filled and productive time here in the Town. The last several weeks have included a 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Senior Center, the renovation of the Senior Center kitchen, as well as much progress on the creation of the highly-anticipated Pickleball Courts at Mombasha Park. Looking ahead, the Senior Center roof will soon be replaced as well as the remaining ADA building updates completed. The kitchen renovation, roof replacement and ADA improvements are all made possible through the Orange County Community Development Block Grant funding. We are grateful for this support in helping to maintain such an integral building for Senior activities in our community.

While there is still plenty of Summer to enjoy, please save the date for our next Food Truck Festival taking place on Saturday, October 28th. Additional details will follow in the coming weeks. Prior to that, the Village of Monroe will once again host the Cheese Festival on Sunday, September 10th. Both events are unique, fun-filled opportunities to celebrate our community, history and the Fall season.

Please read ahead for information on additional upcoming community events throughout the month of August.

All the best,

Tony Cardone

Supervisor, Town of Monroe

Monroe Senior Center Celebrates 25 Years of Serving Our Community

In late June, the Monroe Senior Center celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a barbecue for its members catered by 876 Jerk Food Truck. Joining the festivities and pictured above with Senior Center Director Ann Marie Morris and Supervisor Cardone are former Town Councilmen Don Weeks and Jim Rogers, both whom played an instrumental role in securing funding for the construction of the Senior Center building in 1998. The Senior Center continues to serve as a hub for activities and socialization for our town's Senior Citizen community. The Center's primary goal continues to be providing a balance of social, recreational, educational, health maintenance, economic and financial programs/information to the senior population.

We are grateful for the efforts of Ann Marie Morris, Senior Center Director, who has built the program from the ground up, beginning 25 years ago. She continuously seeks ways to improve the center's offerings, always keeping in mind the best interests of our Seniors. Her dedication and level of care are second to none and we appreciate all she does to ensure the success of the Senior Center!

For more information on the Senior Center, please contact Ann Marie Morris at 845-783-9486 or visit https://monroeny.org/Community/Senior-Center.

Several town employees and board members were on hand to help serve the Seniors their meals and celebrate the building's anniversary with them. Also joining the festivities was Town of Warwick Supervisor Mike Sweeton. We always appreciate the support of our neighboring municipalities!

Get your Paddles Ready-Pickleball Courts Are Coming Soon to Mombasha Park!

Work continues to progress on the Pickleball Courts at Mombasha Park. All three courts were paved last week. The next steps include court surfacing, striping and net installation. The town looks forward to a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the courts in late August/early September.

This fast-paced sport combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong using a paddle and plastic ball and has gained popularity over the past few years. We are excited to bring the sport to Monroe and whether you are new to the sport or a seasoned pro, we hope you'll take advantage of the new courts!

The courts will be open to all residents of the Town of Monroe.
