November 2022

Gratitude: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

Dear Residents & Community Members,

As November comes to a close, we hope this update finds you having enjoyed some quality time with family and friends over the Thanksgiving holiday. As we enter into "the most wonderful time of the year," we do so not only in celebration of the season, but also with a mindful heart. There are many opportunities to spread kindness in this season of giving. We've included some information below on some drives that are underway in an effort to support those in need. Whether you choose to support one of these efforts or one that is near and dear to your heart, we thank you for making a difference.

In the spirit of this festive time of year, we hope you'll join us this Saturday, December 3rd from 2-5 p.m. at our "Meet & Treat" event at Town Hall. With vendors, treats and holiday music, we'll welcome Santa & Mrs. Claus as well for a visit beginning at 3 p.m.

On behalf of the Town Board, we extend our best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Cordially,

Tony Cardone

Monroe Seniors Enjoy Thanksgiving Luncheon and Time Well Spent With M-W Students

A Thanksgiving Luncheon was held on November 17th at the Monroe Senior Center. The young adults from the M-W Athletic Club along with their teacher advisor, Mr. Earl truly make this event a success! The senior citizens from our center are overjoyed at getting back to some sense of normalcy and this event proved we are back on track.

This event benefits both young and old. The young adults interact in meeting and greeting seniors as they arrive to the building. They use their listening and social skills to have meaningful conversations with seniors- many of whom live alone or do not often see their grandchildren. During the lunch portion, several students serve the buffet style meal while others assist seniors that have mobility issues or just want someone to walk with them. The highlight of the day is the DANCING. Many of our seniors citizens danced with the students and the students were more than happy to teach them their dance moves.

We are grateful that we can continue this long standing (15+ years) event in collaboration with the school district. It helps foster a sense of community between two groups that may not normally get a chance to meet. Special thanks to Ann Marie Morris, Senior Center Director for her ongoing efforts in ensuring our seniors have meaningful experiences throughout the year.

Many of our local businesses have expressed their appreciation for our community's support of Small Business Saturday last weekend. Let's keep the momentum going and patronize our local merchants as much as possible this holiday season and beyond. We are lucky to have them in our town and they deserve our support!

Veterans Enjoy Complimentary Screening of "Devotion"

Orange County Executive, Steve Neuhaus and Veterans Service Agency Director, Christian Farrell hosted a free showing of the movie "Devotion" at Flagship Cinemas in Monroe on Tuesday, November 29th. With two showings of the movie made available, the County coordinated the event with assistance from Flagship Cinemas, Shoprite Supermarkets, Inc. and the Monroe Town Board. Special thanks to everyone involved in ensuring the success of this event in appreciation of our veterans.

Devotion, an aerial war epic based on the bestselling book of the same name, tells the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. Their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.

Field of Honor Pays Tribute to Personal Heroes

A special thank you to those who honored their personal hero by participating in our recent Flags For Our Heroes initiative at Town Hall. If you had the chance to see the flags displayed on the Field of Honor in front of Town Hall, we believe you will agree it was truly a breathtaking sight. Looking ahead, we will continue this initiative beginning again in May. Stay tuned in the months ahead for additional details.
